Corsair power supply dead?

So i was on my computer today playing Dead Space when all of a sudden it just shuts off by itself. I know I accidentally short-circuited my motherboard a few months ago (forgot to install mobo standoffs to prevent the mobo from touching the mobo tray) so I thought maybe the mobo died... but I decided to check the PSU anyways. I googled how to test my psu and found the paperclip method (remove psu, turn off power, connect to wall socket, insert one end of paperclip into green wire on 24-pin ATX cable and the other end into the adjacent black wire, turn psu on, check to see if psu fan is spinning) so i tried that but the fan did not spin. I just sent an RMA request online to Corsair (i have a 620HX) but the thing is i'm going to need a replacement unit in under 10 days because I go back to college soon. I can't find the newegg receipt for the psu (i think i might have sent it in for a mail-in rebate on something), and on top of that the barcode on the PSU box is missing because I used that for a MIR as well... so am I still able to do the RMA or not? Also, has anyone had past experience with Corsair RMA's? How long do they usually take? Do you think I'll be able to request express shipping? Any advice is appreciated, really. I just want my PC to be up and running very soon :(

Before you give up on the PSU, try connecting an external fan to it while you jump it. It's possible that it takes a minimum load for the fan to spin up, so make sure that it isn't actually putting out any power before you write it off as dead.

You don't need the bar code to send in the PSU for an RMA. As for your other requests, I don't know first-hand, but I hear that Corsair's tech support is pretty accommodating.

Use newegg's live chat. They may be able to help you find it faster.

Can't find the Newegg receipt?

Just login to your account > My Account > Order History > Show all, and select the one when you bought the PSU. You should be able to print one up just fine.

Thanks for all of your replies.

I just did newegg livechat and apparently I can't RMA it through newegg with the barcode missing (despite the MIR) so i'm going to have to call corsair... then re-explain the situation and hope that they can send me a replacement within 10 days... how troublesome.

If you hit any snags, PM me here and I'll see what I can do for you.

I love customer support right on these forums :)

Still, glad I haven't needed it yet :p

I mean Corsair has good rma services, but i wouldnt put any money on it being less than 10 days =/

Well I just pm'd Redbeard, hopefully he can help me out, otherwise I might have to buy a new psu...

Just a quick question: Is there any way to safely separate the 20-pin wires from the 4-pin wires on the ATX cable of my HX620? I just tried the paperclip test on an old 250W PSU from an emachines and it worked, now I want to try to hook up my HX620 onto the emachines mobo and see if it lights up. Problem is that the mobo uses a 20-pin ATX instead of 24-pin.

How? There's a little black line separating the 20 from the 4, but I don't see how to separate it. When i try to pull them apart it feels like it's going to break...

One side should have a clip that you can detach, and the extra four pins fold away to the side.
