Corsair HX650 Problems

I recently built a new pc and am using a Corsair HX 650 PSU. It seems to be fine but when I fire up a game I can here this fluddering beeping sound from what sounds like the back of the PSU. It comes and goes every few minutes. Anyone else have this issue? just a bad unit?

I too have a newer version HX650 and am experiencing the same symptoms I think. Sounds kind of like the fan lightly brushing against something to me. Notice it every few minutes. Haven't had time to diagnose since I had to get it out to a customer so I swapped it out and set it aside for later diagnosis.

Yes, exactly thought it was a fan but appears to be coming from the back of the PSU.

Probably Coil Whine.

Seasonic based units seem to suffer from it a lot. I'd RMA it.

Finally got around to checking the noise on my HX650 and it turned out that some of the internal wires were just close enough to the fan that they would get slightly scrubbed sometimes. I think that as the powersupply would heat up, the heat would cause the cables to relax a little, allowing them to sag into the fan because the sound would get worse as the computer heated up. Just used a screwdriver and poked the cables out of the way a little and haven't had anymore problems.

I wonder how many of the "Chirping" units suffer from coil whine, or if it's just the fan wire problem.

No new version of the HX650. Same old unit that came out years ago, still the same and still available on the market. Not worthwhile at this rate, though.

The fan used on these SeaSonic S12/M12 units is a dual ball bearing Adda fan. It's a good fan, so I'm pretty damn sure it's coil/cap whine and NOT fan bearing noise.

FYI, caps also whine like coils, but that doesn't always happen.

^ There are indeed two versions of the HX650.

One made by Seasonic with a circular grill, which is the older one rated for 80 Bronze, and one made by CWT with a bar grill, which is the newer one rated for 80 Gold. They are marketed both under the HX650 name. It's the newer CWT one that has the chirping sound fault, most likely caused directly or indirectly by the fan PWM circuitry. You should notice that the chirping sound happens at system shutdown and whenever there is a significant change in load prompting the fan to ramp. Since both these units are backed by a 7 year warranty, you could try and RMA it.
