Corsair Dominator Problems + OCing..

Hey, I posted a while ago with this problem, I've still not sorted it so please don't flame :)

One of the last things I've bought was this bundle:

Asus Maximus Formula SE mobo
Intel Core2Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (@ stock 2.4Ghz)
2GB Corsair Dominator PC2-8500 1066Mhz..

I also bought an BFG 8800GT OC2 & an Antec 1200 Case.

I've recently bought another 2GB of the same memory, when I put the memory in together my system won't boot. I've tried both 2gig sets together and both work fine, but when I put them in together... boomph, nothing.

  • The memory I have is both Corsair Dominator CM2X1024-8500C5D memory though 2GB is 2.10v ver 4.1 and the other 2GB is 2.20v ver2.1, would this be an issue?
  • I'm running my CPU @ stock settings too, with a stock cooler, could this be a problem?
  • Secondly, I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this (Though it's not really a priority to me at the moment if It's not the right forum) If I was to start OCing with my current hardware, how far could I go on the stock cooler safely, so that my computer will run nicer but will not be unstable?
  • I'm about to order a Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme, would this be a good idea for air cooling+OCing? (Ive heard it's one of the best) and how much more of an OC could I get whilst still staying stable on air?

My main priority is getting my system up and running with stable settings and the 4GB of memory for gaming, I'm not overly bothered about OCing at the moment.

If somebody could basically tell me which settings to change, I've added bios pics to show which settings are at what at the moment (as I said, all default)

Even if it's a simple answer to tell me which timings/fsb/ratios to change everything to, to get things working that would be great.

** Remember: I only have 2Gb in at the moment, I've got 4GB to use.

Many Thanks,

What voltage are you running the vDimm at on the 2 sticks?

I have no idea, appologies for my naivity but where do I find that?

I believe the different versions of the ram could be your issue since their required voltage is different, i have 4x1GB corsair dominator ddr2 1066 as well and OC'd my q6600 to 3.6 just fine with them. they were all the same version. I'm also using an unlapped TRUE

if I was to set them both at a higher voltage and OC them slightly, could that work?

If youre saying youre having issues with 4x1gb sticks, thats most likely youre problem. Youre not supposed to use 4x1gb sticks, they are known to cause issues. I know some boards seem to handle it fine but...others seem to tank, which is probably exactly what youre seeing. If its perfectly stable with 2x1gb then becomes unstable with all 4gb, thats your problem.

The only thing you can do is flash your mobo bios to the latest and hope they fixed it, whichever brand it is. Otherwise, youll need to sell them and get 2x2gb instead if you want 4gb.

Okay, I'll try flashing it to the latest Retsam, thanks for your input :)

It is never a good idea to mix 2 different versions of memory. Also, if you are able to get them to run together stable, it's typically more difficult to OC with 4 modules as opposed to 2 modules. You'll likely need to increase the voltage to the memory controller due to the increased load of 4 modules.

Hi Mike, It's not 2 different versions, or at least, it wasn't supposed to be when I originally bought it. All the website said was:

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB)

With it being the same memory but two gig of it being newer? or something would that matter or would it work the same as:

Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 QUAD Dominator PC2-8500C5 Quad2X (4x1GB)

I am also having a few problems with updating my BiOS, once I fix this things might work a little better lol.

The memory I have is both Corsair Dominator CM2X1024-8500C5D memory though 2GB is 2.10v ver 4.1 and the other 2GB is 2.20v ver2.1, would this be an issue?

It is not as common these days as in the past but yes, mixing 2 different revisions of the same memory can cause the issues you are seeing. Ideally, a 2 x 2GB kit is your best option.

Also, clear the CMOS, install any single stick and try updating the BIOS. Flash it in DOS or with the built in flash utility, NOT IN WINDOWS.

K I've updated my bios to the latest and installed SP1 on vista, I can now get 2 gig to run fine at 1066 (duel channel) but not 4. I'm going to try upping the voltage to 2.2 and trying to run the 4GB, think this will help mike?

With 4 modules, you will likely need to increase your memory controller voltage as 4 up is twice the electrical load on the NB than 2 up.

Ive put the voltage up to 2.2v on all sticks, seems to be running alright @ 1066

if anybody else has problems with anything to do with this board, I strongly advise checking out the asus forums, no offense to you guys at all as you've all been pretty helpful (especially mike), just seems more people with the same problems on the asus forum and a solution was easy to find.

Thanks a lot mike

I had a similar problem although with a different board manuf. My issue was resolved by actually lowering the MCH voltage. I can't remember the exact voltages but I lowered it 1 "tick" down from stock.
