Corruption errors

My friend just bought a DVD rom (for the first time) so he would play Age of Conan -- but when he attempts to install he gets a corruption error.

He is sure he installed it correctly, the error he gets (when he clicks on the drive in his my computer section--as the game doesn't launch itself) it gives him an error before it even starts. He has a similar problem with trying to install COD4 as well.

He has no trouble downloading and installing large files, which made me believe that the problem must be the drive, but its such a curious situation, I've never really heard of anything like this.

Any insight would be much appreciated

Possibly the Drive or the version of firmware installed is not compatible with the copy protection used in the games.
Alternatively the drive may have a fault.

It would help if you give us the error.

If other DVD's run in it I would say it is on the software/firmware side, Otherwise there are a few things it could be from a screwy drive to insufficient power to the drive. I have see drives not respond if the power connector was shared with say a hard drive because the power supply was close to maxed out.

If the DVD drive is SATA, a very likely cause for this problem is that the SATA controller is set for AHCI mode in the BIOS but the DVD drive isn't compatible with AHCI. Most optical SATA drives will not work properly with AHCI and will produce read errors.

If the DVD drive is SATA, try setting the SATA controller to IDE mode and see if this fixes the problem.
