I think this is what the case is when I go to install windows it says unable to access information and I am not even able to partion the HD. I installed windows on an older HD. Windows will recongize the drive in the device manager but it doesn't show up in My Computer. I just don't know what to do and I just bought this HD and don't want to RMA plz how do I fix this because I know corrupted MBR doesn't kill a HD. It is a 40 gig Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8.

Have you checked the HD with the diag utiliy from Maxtor to make sure the drive isn't DOA?

What version of windows are you trying to install?

The hard drive isn't DOA because it has had windows on it before I just got a new sound card and decided to reformat. The version of windows is XP

It's used... all the more reason to check it.... Get the Ultimate Boot CD burn it to cd. Boot with it. Run the Maxtor HD check. If that passes, great, then run a partition tool from the UBCD to fix the drive's MBR.

It told me my hard drive is failing after I did the quick and advanced test but I am low level formating it and I'll see where we stand
