corrupt or missing ntsf.sys file?

I restarted my computer yesterday and when I tried to turn it back on, I got this:

Windows could not start because the fallowing file is missing or corrupt:
System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the origional setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair

I put in the disk and tried to do what it said, but it went straight to the screen that is all about my current partions and it was asking to install windows.

you don't get the screen that asks if you want to install or start the recovery console...? strange...

what you could try is getting some other sort of LiveCD.
Once you boot up into that, you should be able to pull out that disc, insert your Windows disc, and copy the file over. Or even better if you boot up off a USB drive.
 
I tried to install windows on a separate partition in order to copy the ntfs.sys file to the first one. After I did so, I tried to boot up in my first partion, but it still gave me the same error. I do no get how this works. I copied the working ntfs.sys from the working windows, but it still says that it is missing or corrupt on the other one.
 
Why not just do a repair installation ... by letting Windows handle it? Drop the disc in and boot to it. When Windows see's the existing partition, press R to repair.
 
Sometimes Windows fussing about damaged or missing files at startup is a sign of a damaged section of the HD. I've seen SpinRite fix these issues on more than one PC.
