Sorry if this information is hiding in plain sight but I've just been offered a 7970 for $150 AUD and the owner is buying a 780GTX.

Can anyone confirm that the PPD is as stated @ 110k PPD for the card? when running -beta Core_17

I can't put it in my main rig as that's already a 3930k + 690 GTX and mixing vendors seems to break the client however I have a spare 1155 mobo/parts and could buy a Celeron G1610 for $40 to get this card folding.

Does this seem like a plan? $190 for 100k ppd? Power isn't an issue.

Honestly, $200 for 100K is well worth it. I bought my two 660's which only do 22K per w/o beta units and now do 44K per with beta units and it's still less than what you'll do. You can google images to see it's in fact true. This isn't just some random thing either, AMD is going to be leading the charge over Nvidia for the first time in 6 years thanks to their OpenCL 1.2 support. It just sucks donkey balls with Nvidia right now.

AMD folk who are die-hard folders, or newbiews, are going to find folding@home to be far more welcoming than ever before. Realistically you can expect 100K at minimum and up to 120K. I don't think you'll have to worry much about the processor since the new Core_17 doesn't rape the CPU like it does for Nvidia where each card will require its own Core from the CPU to run.

Buy it and fold or I'll find you, get your phone book, call your buddy and buy it from him. Don't be a sad panda like I now am :(.

Done deal then, It's one with the rear exhaust vent like the nVidia cards and the Mobo I have should take 3 of them stacked if I wish to upgrade over time.

If the AMD doesn't smash the CPU usage like my nVidia does then I mgith look into a 3770k for a bit of a PPD boost aswell.

Thanks for the help!

O/T: You're not wrong about the nVidia hogging an entire core, i need to run -smp 8 to get my GTX690 getting 150k PPD on the 3930k, even with -smp 10 it drops to 135k ~ without getting a 15k boost in CPU PPD.

If you might run 3 GPUs then maybe not go with the Celeron. 3770K will be overkill unless you're folding smp on it as well (but if you're folding for team 33 then DEFINITELY get a 3770K and smp on it) :D

I have a brand new PowerColor 7970 with stock clocks pulling ~89k PPD.
100k shouldn't be hard with a mild OC.

my 7970 is easily pulling over 100k on core 17. Thats a hell of a deal on a 7970....

The client is finicky, but it's certainly possible to run both nvidia and AMD at the same time.
