core2duo E6600 or spring for E6700

Doing a new build for gaming should I spring extra for the E6700? I think it would be better to stick with a E6600.
If the E6600 is the way to go would you guys recommend o/c? do I have to swap out the stock fan to o/c? I am thinking that If I was to o/c I would like to do something not too aggresive example water cooling. Last question is, is the stock fan good enough?
 
E6600 is the way to go. Only $300 :D

Definately overclock. Achieving 3ghz if piece of cake and can even be done with the stock cooler, though an aftermarket one is a better option.
 
What kind of aftermarket fan model/brands do you recommend? Hopefully It's not something much noisier than the stock unit. Will using a non stock fan void my warantee?
 
You bring up a good question though, in that if the only difference between the 2 CPUs is 260 Mhz, why is there a $209 price difference?? Doesn't that seem a little crazy to anybody else??

I say this b/c I keep rolling back and forth between building a new C2D system, but I can't understand Intel's pricing difference between these 2 chips and why anyone would want to spend the extra $209??

This is odd, hes talking about higher multiplyer and being easier on the ram
 
go with the e6600 and see what it can do on stock voltages ... if you are happy with the overclock you get , then stick with the stock heatsink/fan ... if you need to add some v's to get to where your happy ...then invest in a good after market cooling solution

I easily got my E6600 to 3 GHz with stock voltage and cooler.
It wouldn't go much higher because of the memory I use.
It can probably reach around 3.5 GHz with a good Zalman cooler or such, increased voltage, and good overclocking memory.

So no, I wouldn't go for an E6700.
 
Thanks guys, I was just looking at something and the core2duo processors are odd, usually when intel does a price leap is because there is some big differece usually supporting some extra things but it looks identical.
 
No, this is how they have always done pricing.

Their pricing has always been logarithmic. The higher in ratings you go the larger the price jump between ratings. Very typical of the last 10 years or so...
 
E6600 is definitely your best bet... Save the extra cash and get a GOOD HSF or go water or something :)
 
I'm running my 6600 at 3.6 with default voltage. It's water cooled, but could also do it with a HSF.
 
Y'all forget the new Thermalright HR-01 and Scythe Infinity. Both can sport a thicker fan than the 25mm in the Sunbeam.

Also, I wouldnt necessarily spend money on the E6600/6700 since they dont offer any better performance. The E6400 OCed almost matches a higher OCed X6800, so yeah...

I would agree that the E6400 is the best price/value. I have a E6600 only because i got a great deal on it. Use the money saved to buy some good ram.
 
Reason to stick with the E6600 id the extra 2mb cache, I also don't want to o/c too much, something simple, don't want to kill my processor faster (o/c wears life of processor, since newer processor use less power it is less likey). Guys do you know any good mobos to go with it, preferably Asus. I would think the extra cache would help propel a 8800gtx easier.

I've never seen an overclocked processor die quick... Had a celeron 300a overclock to 450 for like 7 years and it still functions...

If you take the precaution of cooling I don't think you will have problems at all...
 
Just get the E6600. No major difference between the two, once you overclock, so save the cash :)

You can say the same thing about the E6400 which is even cheaper. Once OCed (same clock as E6600 @2.4) the CPU is as fast as an E6600 at everything. I personally dont see the reason to throw away money on 2mb of cache that just sits there without doing anything.
 
ot the E6600, man the holidays really slowed me down, I have to wait for delivery of O/S, I will say one thing, installing the fans is a pain in the rear, I am not a fan of how these fans bolt in.

Your not going to kill your processor if you OC. Unless you overvolt it or go for extreme overclocks.
 
No way I would get a E6700... it's, like, twice the price of the E6600. That's crazy. Takes two minutes to go faster, and it -will- go faster, buy practically any E6600 and it's an almost gauranteed 3.0 ghz.

The E6600 I settled on over the other choices for the L2 cache. Someone in this thread said that it "sits there without doing anything" but there's actually a measurable 3.5% boost to performance from going to 4 megs L2 cache. I dunno if it's worth the premium over the E6400 but hey, every little bit counts. At the ultra high frequencies these cores can get to, that 3.5% adds up.

Got my E6600 to 3.0 ghz on stock performance and cooling and my system is rock-solid stable. These C2D's are technological wonders.

But he's right you know.
It's not exactly 1 to 1 with the E6600 at the same OC but for being 1/3 cheaper and only 10%
slower at most in certain tasks. It is the better deal all the way around.

If I were to upgrade this coming year, it would definitely be an E6400 i buy.

Why would they double the cache size for nothing? Perhaps it helps with 64-bit, or heavy multi-tasking.

It's not doubled for absolutely nothing.
It helps out a bit, but mainly people like to pay for
more of something even if that something is not that useful.

Couldn't they have used the same price structure with 2 megs of cache, and turned a greater profit, or lowered prices faster? They'd still be out-performing the K8. It makes no sense to me.
