Core i7 temp/general HSF question

I put a TRUE-120 on my 920 a week or two ago, used some Ceramique with it (tried it instead of AS5) - my idle temps are ~40C, load temps ~60C-58C for each core, running 8 instances of P95; all at stock settings.

Did I apply thermal paste wrong? Are these high? I've got it all in a HAF 932 case, so airflow should be fine; my apartment is probably around 21C.

I hunted around, and found no real answer for this; if a thread exists, please point me to it

Sounds about right.

i7 do run a tad bit hotter being 130W.

OK; I've seen some people claim lower temps (lower by 10C) so I wanted to find out. I've only got the stock fan (that came with the TRUE-120 1366) on it, so that might be a way to improve the temps...

Looks like your HSF does a better job at load than idle.

I use water, but my 4.0 GHz 920 runs about 25C at idle and 40C under 3D load.
If I run 8 instances of Orthos I can push the temps to around 55C-60C, again that is with 1,43VCore and 4.0 GHz overclock.

i am using my AM2 Zalman 9500 Cooler which keeps my chip at 40 Idle at 3.5 GHz with some MX2 Compound, load is about 55 when playing games and other things, havent stress tested it yet

What are you using to monitor your temps? If they are accurate though, those are pretty good numbers.

Those people can only 'claim'. It also really depends on your ambient temperature. My temps @ 4.0 GHz, 1.344v are ~40*C idle and 75-77*C 100% CPU load.
The stock fan that comes with the Thermalright is a good dynamic fluid bearing fan.

The eVGA ELEET utility and Realtemp - they both concur it seems, with TJMax being at 100C, I think?

I may grab some MX2 or something down the line once I start to OC some...which I do need to start doing.

Edit: Having dropped the temp of my apartment some (it was getting too warm for me) my idle temps dropped to 38C or so (38C being the hottest core, 34C being the coolest core.)

Odd, 10c lower sounds like the exact temperature difference people who turn off HT get

I've been hearing that HT is a good thing to have on. It shouldn't affect the temps by as much as 10*C, but turning off HT does allow you to decrease the Vcore. Some utilities (such as SpeedFan) incorrectly report the temps (15*C difference for me) because they have an incorrect TJMax by default.
