Core i7 Heat Issues?

My i7 hits about 97c under full stress (Prime), with a Corsair H-50, it's a new build but surely this can't be a reasonable temperature?

I tried once using stock TIM and once again using Arctic Silver 5, same result.

Anyone have this setup? I'm beginning to think the H50 is faulty...
 
Either,
The H50 is faulty
It's not sitting on the heatsink properly
You're using way to much TIM
You're overclocking it wrong

Tim was razor thin (I use a glove to spread it and take my time)
Heatsink appears to be sat correctly (tight as can be, rear bracket flush)

So I'm guessing its the H50. Guh.

Would a faulty H50 really cause temps that high? I mean the fluid will still convect if the pump was faulty surely? (I'm just looking for an excuse not to take it off, as its a PITA)

In that case yes, i would get looking at an RMA for it.

With no flow of water you will have a lot higher temps. How warm is the rad?

Good point with the rad, I'll check when I get home. The pump still reports its RPM though, would that stop if it was jammed/broke?

Luckily I have a spare H50 from my old q6600 rig lying around, didn't want to disturb it but looks like I'll have to to rule out a fault with this one.

I did notice the new one made a hell of a lot more "water noise" than my old one, as in gurgling and bubbling, the old one never made any noises like that even when new (It does settle down after a few minutes though). I'm beginning to think it might be an air bubble/coolant issue.
 
If you can hear water nosie then you may need to bleed and refill somehow, but if it's new i'd get an RMA on that shiz.
The pump shouldn't really report an RPM if it's screwed.

My advice is when you get home, listen to the block/pump for any pump noise and also feel how hot the rad and pipes are. Try the Q6600 H50 and consider RMA
 
Yea the bleed would probably sort it but they're not user-serviceable, luckily Corsair customer support seems to be pretty good so I'll have a closer inspection tonight and maybe fire them a quick email.

Naturally I'll come back crying if the backup H50 does the same thing, but cheers for the help.
 
sound like the H50 did not fill up as it is supposed to or it might be leaked ... I would return it to store (if possible) or RMA.
Temp @ 97C is WAY too HIGH...
 
Get a new H50 or H70.

Temp was up to high 80's and low 90's (highest core temp, 100% load at 4.08ghz) with my previous H50 push-pull setup.

I have switched and been using a H70 with fans run at 1900rpm, 1800rpm and exhaust dirty air out from the case. It has a constant temp at 86c (highest core temp - see spec), 100% full load with Etsu Shin X23 compound.
