If you want to get to 4Ghz on air, I wouldn't cheap out on the heatsink. There are TONS of comparisons out there, including many many on [H]. But getting to 4Ghz depends on the chip anyway... yours might need fairly high voltage to even get there, in which case only the best coolers will do.
 
If you are going for 4GHz, I definitely wouldn't skimp on the heatsink. If you must have something cheap, check out the Cogage TRUE Spirit. Try www.svc.com (they tend to have a decent price and I know that they have the newest version). It's what I'm using to run my i7 at 4.0Ghz. Not that the 212 Plus isn't a decent cooler, but I just can't help but feel that it wouldn't be adequate for your needs.

what settings did u use (voltage etc) to get yourself to 4g with your cogage and what are your temps?
 
The Cogage True Spirit is a very nice air-cooler for a palatable price. The only thing I would recommend is buying some Scythe GentleTyphoons fans to replace the stock one. Two of the 1850rpm can push more than enough air and are surprisingly quiet.
 
SVC is anal if you return too many things, lol. I had to bring in the the exact number of screws for this one thing I returned.
 
wow the price changed so fast on the 212 plus heatsink, I just ordered one a couple days ago for ~$26

Doesn't really matter since each chip is different.

The Spirit is definitely your best bet for budget. In the $50-$60 range the Megahalem is the leader. (Thermalright has a new product out, Venomous X, but I haven't seen too many credible reviews of it. [H]'s review showed it performed the exact same as the TRUE yet cost more.) For low RPM fans the overall leader is the NH-D14 but that's around $80; for higher RPM with the ability to fit a 120x38mm fan that would be the Cogage Arrow.
 
I'm currently running 3.65GHz on it at 80C being peak temp under constant load.

What is "it"? Those temps seem pretty high to me. What is your core voltage, and ambient? I'm running the TRUE Spirit on a 920 D0 at that same speed, 1.2125v and my fully loaded temps just touch 65°C. My ambient is probably ~68°F.
 
I run the Xigmatek DK in Norcal on a 920 D0, can definitely hit 4.0 with no problems, never going above 80C. I did a really lazy OC too, pretty sure I can do lower volts but haven't had the time to mess with it.

Got it for like $40.
 
you can find the xigmatech s1283 and its variants (dark knight, red scorpion, etc) for $30 and up if you look around. these will cool pretty much as well as the coolers costing 2x and 2.5x as much.
 
meh... I'd take the True Spirit over the s1283 (and I have an OCZ Vendetta 2, which is a slightly improved s1283).

Cogage True Spirit, and the stock fan is actually pretty good. You could run 2 fans on there and undervolt.

I'd tend to agree that the S1283 is a pretty good budget cooler. Although, the stock fan on it is not the best out there, and i'd recommend replacing it with something like a yate loon, slipstream, or ultra kaze(on a fan controller of course).
