I cant decide what i want to go with and in asking for some help. i have the money for the core i7 965. but is this cpu really worth the extra 700+ dollars. Ill be doing alot of audio and video. also some photo shop as well as some intense gaming. just curious about how much of a difference there is between them.

even if you have the money, its better spent somewhere else. you aren't gaining much.

Even with a six figure income and a 5K PC budget its hard as an OCer recommend the 920. Yeah I mean 920 and a 4870x2 is less than a 965.

I'd definitely go with the 920, I undervolted it and then set the BCLK to 160 and viola! instant 965 w/o the unlocked multiplier and on stock cooling.
Now you can get yourself some awesome videocards or 14 brand new games or a 4870X2 AND 4 new games, the possibilities are endless. :D

I asked the same question during the week. Yah you can OC the 920 to 965 levels, but you can OC a 965 higher still. Prob get 4.5 on a good air cooler and def higher on water. So as of this moment I am leaning more towards the 965. Is it worth the extra $700, no the price to performance ratio is no were near the 920, but if you got the money, what the hell.

Well you can OC the 920 just as high, from what I've found out using liquid it's more heat limited than BCLK limited. I can hit 4GHz easily on mine under water and have gotten as high as 220 BCLK but by then my 2x120mm rad can't handle anymore heat but I think that I may be able to back down the voltage a bit since I was at 1.5v
From what I've seen though they'll both max out on air about the same, if your going extreme cooling different story but air or water go with the 920 or 940 not the 965EE.
EDIT: I seriously doubt that you'll get 4.5GHz on air on ANY i7.

What real-world advantage does the 965's 6.4 GT/s QPI have over the 920's (or 940's) 4.8 GT/s QPI?

I already have everything but the cpu memory and motherboard. just read something today about a core i7 hitting 5.4 Ghz on LN. cant remember where.. i guess ill stick with a 920 for now and buy another harddrive and water cool everything.

I would doubt that there's much of a performance difference between the two because the QPI is so fast anyway.

..easy, buy the i920, ;)send me the difference (US$700 odd yes?);), then I can buy an i920 and a motherboard :eek:and b your friend for a long time, well @least till the next upgrade:D:D

..seriously though, i7920 can be o'ced to stock 965 levels easily it seems, for a huge saving...IMHO, if you have $$$ now, be prudent:confused:...

i920 - 2.66 GHZ - $300
i940 - 2.93 GHZ - $580
i965 - 3.20 GHZ - $1,060

Charging 3x+ the amount for 20% more speed that can be had for free with 3 minutes and 24 seconds of OC'ing......Priceless.

For what it's worth, with the $760 you save over not going with the extreme, you could purchase an ASUS PT6 Mobo, 6GB of DDR3 1600 Triple Channel, a 1 TB Hard Drive, and still have roughly $70 left over to buy a game you could not play before with your old computer and a case of beer to celebrate.

OR..............you could buy a processor that is 540mhz faster and comes in a black box.

:)
