core 2 quad q6600

Hey who has a core 2 quad q6600 and how is it?

Its a very nice CPU if you want Quad core. Are you looking to build a new tower or just an upgrade (Mobo&CPU)?

You might get some negative response for this thread however.
 
The Q6600 is a good CPU at a good price, and I'm happy with mine. Although it was probably the best choice on the market last year, the situation now is more complex though. The E8400 is 45nm, higher-clocked, has SSE4 and is cheaper, but is dual-core, which may or may not be a limitation depending on the usage scenario. The 45nm quad-cores are also believed to be out in just over a month, which may be worth waiting for (though it's questionable whether the affordable ones will overclock as well as the Q6600).
 
The decision between getting a dual core vs a quad should be based upon what you want to do with the machine and how long you'd like to keep it without upgrading. Even today, very few games make use of all four cores. Of those that do, RTS games like Supreme Commander will utilize four cores more effectively than first person shooters. If, however, you do any sort of video editing or encoding, image manipulation work, or software development, then a quad should serve you better than a dual. Lastly, if you intend to fold or participate in any other distributed computing network, a quad may be the way to go.

If you want a high overclocked quad core, the Q6600 for $250-$270 is hands down the processor to get. The Penryn based Q9450 (which will be out in the middle of March and is intended to replace the Q6600) will ship with a lower multiplier. Many Q6600s can reach 3.6ghz with good air cooling, and a good water setup can get one into the 3.8-4.0ghz range for everyday operation. With the Q9450 however, the best OC that will likely be achievable on available motherboards is 3.6ghz.

On the other hand, if you don't care about a high OC, or if efficiency is more important, such that you value a cooler running chip vs a higher clocked one, the Q9450 will serve you well. Furthermore, it has the benefit of SSE4 and a 5% performance increase per clock (when compared to Conroe/Kentsfield chips.) Note that the Q9450 will likely sell at retail for $100 more than the Q6600 at launch.

-overkill for the gaming
-freakin awesome for video encoding/converting and the music recording software that i run
-i dont overclock it. i may one of these days.
 
k i might wait for the 45nm's for the cooler temps and lower power consumption but then also im worried about how they oc so ill see when they come out.
