Core 2 or more ram

Looking at a couple of notebooks and I wondered which one you would pickup.

One notebook comes with a Core 2 Duo T5600 with 1GB ram, and the other has a Turion 64 X2 TL-52 with 2GB ram.

As a note, the Core 2 notebook also uses the Intel 950 graphics where as the Turion one uses Radeon 1150. And the rest of the specs appear to be the same and they are also from the same manufacturer.

Not intending to game much on the computer, mainly for browsing, DVD/video playback and allowing us to work on our house design using Chief Architect without having to be at home to do it.

Thanks.

gut reaction is to say core 2 duo. It's easier (and cheaper) to upgrade RAM than it is a processor.

You should probably look into more than just those main specs, build quality, optical drives, etc...are they comparable in everything else?

For what its worth, I just got an Asus A8Js with a T7200 and 1 gig. I'm spoiled to 2 on my desktop, but its really not that awful. Perfectly usable and really pretty snappy until I can afford another gig stick in a few weeks.

The general consensus is that the Core 2 stuff is quite a bit better in the mobile arena, but that's purely subjective and YMMV of course. Agreed that other build aspects are very important. And while it is rare, my Asus actually did come with 1 stick and a free slot, so you might see if the Core 2 machine you were looking like is configured that way by some miracle.

A sidenote: not sure what your budget or system requirements are, but I'm absolutely LOVING my asus notebook. No regrets whatsoever.

just by seeing the choices for the video card i'm going to guess the budget he's on is under $1000. the asus enlightenedby42 mentioned is $1450+.

i'd go core 2 and upgrade to 2 gigs of ram in the future if you need it, and hopefully that laptop uses a 1 gig sodimm,

i'm not sure about which video card is better but i'd say they're about the same, not too many people benchmark integrated graphics, maybe you can try to decipher this benchmark list, they use future mark benchmarks which aren't that great for predicting real world performance

the C2D is way better than the Turion X2...and if you want to keep that laptop for a while that's the way to go

however, the X1150 graphics card beats the GMA950...and 2GB RAM sure beat 1GB ;) so if you're planning to change it soon or dont need a powerful CPU the turion may be the way to go...

Thanks for the replies, and like it was mentioned I am looking at a sub $1000 price range.

I think that this will end up being a last minute in the store decision when I have both of the notebooks in front of me. It appears that both memory slots are occupied so it would take buying 2 - 1GB ships to upgrade the memory. That will be something to consider as well.

If it were me, I'd go with whichever one has the longest battery life. In day to day use I doubt you'd be able to feel the difference between the two processors, and as someone already said, you can always upgrade the ram.

The Core 2 will walk all over the Turion when it comes to battery life

I love the T7200 in my Dell and it's a lot faster and cooler than my friends Gateway with a Turion-X2

agreed. my T7200 just gets a little warm under extreme load. Doing normal stuff you can't even feel it. I came up from an Inspiron 8100 with a P3 and it would cook the flesh on your legs. And the fan was louder than ultra high speed panaflo chilling my overclocked Opteron

I agree. If you have a Costco membership, they have a HP6174cl for $1100. Comes with a Duo 2 and 2GB of DDR2 memory and a 7400Go
