dudes, i have a ninja plus rev B heatsink and fan here but my processor is hitting over 40C
even when its idle.

im using Core Temp to examine my current temperature
Core #1 42C
Core #2 39C
Tcasemax 85C

is this too hot? i havent overclocked the processor yet.. planning to change my heatsink soon..

If and when you change your heatsink, check the flatness of the heatspreader or IHS. If it is not very flat, you should lap it. Just go from say 320 to 600 to 800 all the way up to like 1500 or more. You should do this to your heatsink as well. You can shave up to 10C probably with a good lap job on your processor and heatsink with just the right amount of TIM. (a.k.a. "thermal grease")

How is an E6300 idling at 40c ok?

depends on what you are using to read your temps. If you are using certain utilities you'll get lower readings since they take the temp from outside the die, whereas core temp reads the temp from inside the die... hence the "higher" readings.

Oh... and too the guy who says to lap the CPU that's a TERRIBLE idea. Unless he's trying for maximum overclocks then there is no reason to lap your CPU. Sorry... but a few degrees (10 is VERY optimistic) isn't worth voiding your warranty.

First, please do some homework regarding core2 processors and their temperatures, and also, don't try to tell us that you were using a scythe ninja and your 6400 idled at 18c (64F)...that's a little on the ridiculous side...that means your ambient room temps were WELL below the normal 72 degree (F) average room temperature...I don't think so...even if you kept your room in the mid 60's, your processor isn't going to idle at less than ambient on air cooling, so don't BS us...And if you weren't using a Scythe Ninja or some other form of air cooling, then your post really has no relevance to the OP's post...

Now, to the OP: Using CoreTemp, my e6300 oc'd to 2.8GHz (400x7) idles at around 43c and loads at around 51c with room temps in the low 70s...under orthos, sometimes gets up to 55c and this is with the Scythe Ninja Plus...I live in MI and if I leave my windows opened when it's in the 40s outside, my temps will idle around 37C...your temps are perfectly fine as Intel's Thermal Specification for the E6300 is 61.4°C.

Wow, alot of mixed temps in the post :p If your using Core Temp to read your temps, it is going the read HIGHER then any other motherboard temp reading program, PERIOD! Your temp seems to be right on par, so no worries there. To the person who said lapping the CPU isnt worth it, I have to disagree with you. People on average who lapped their CPU's see anywhere from 5-6c drops in temps. That is a great drop in temp if you ask me. An E6300 is only a 180 dollar chip, so vioding a warr. isnt really that big of a deal. (I dont mean to sound like im rich, FAR FROM IT, as a matter of fact, I dont even have a job now) but a 180 dallor chip is minimal, if it were say an X6800, then I would be scared of doing it, yes!

jonahex, I would highly suggest that you do some research on the core 2 duo line of processors. Specifically in the areas of safe idle/load temperatures and programs for reading temperatures. Please do this before making anymore comments that blatantly false.

Now that the useful information has been sorted out from the false information I would like to restate my original post- Your temps are fine. Nothing to worry about :D

My e6300 is about 56-57 under full load using TAT. This is with the stock cooler. I see no reason to buy another cooler, as I'm comfortable with these temps. I'm not looking to hold onto this processor for several years...I'll be going quad core once they come out, so I'll sell my e6300.

I also hit 55-59C with my E6300 @ load (Temps measured with TAT), with stock cooling. A fellow user at overclock.net did the test of putting a thermal probe between his HS and Core 2 Duo processor and proceded to measure temps the way Intel describe it on their spec finder website. He first checked to see if there was a diffrence between TAT and his probe... there was, but no more than 3C.

Essentially, the temps he got are very similar to the temps Intel recommends as max temps. So E6300 users shouldn't go past 61.4C, measured by CoreTemp or TAT.

I've bought an Arctic Freezer Pro when I heard the results from his test.

P.S. I'm running @ 3.01GHz.

My E6400 at stock speed with the stock cooler would idle around 35-37C using Core Temp to measure. 42C is perfectly fine, but i would think that Ninja cooler would do better. Case air flow is probably your problem or your room temps are a bit high. But, I simply wouldn't worry about your CPU temps.

No need to be insulting. My temps were taken with Core Temp in a mATX case. Those are what I got/get, if I were running my E6400 I'd give you screenshots, as it is I'm running my E6600 and get the temps I posted. Room temp is around 67F whatever that equats to. I just keep my cables dressed and out of the way of airflow and ensure that I have adequate space around my PC to allow for proper airflow.

When I get to my PC and I remember or care to, I'll post screenshots of my temps using the E6600, however there's no need to be a condescending jackass about it.

Now I remember why I've put off joining this community for the last few years...

We dont care how you "ROUTE" your cables, we dont see anyway possible that your chip is idling @ 18c using CORE TEMP. If your using another program to read those temps, then yes. As other programs read (socket) temps or diode temps.

no need to be a condescending jackass about it.

I wasn't trying to be a "jackass" as you put it...but I'm sorry, there's no way your 6400 was idling at 18C on air cooling...Do you realize how cool your ambient temps would have to be for that? No way that's happening with air cooling unless you live up here in the north and your PC is outside...sorry...

You said your room temp is 67 degrees...that's 19.4C. I'm sorry, but your processor can't idle under room temp on AIR...

To both you and the gent above - it's what Core Temp read. I'd love to be able to take out my 6600 and slap the 6400 back in so I could grab the screen's for you, but a) I'm lazy ;) and b) I'll assume you're both familiar with the fun of installing a Scythe cooler. :) I'll have the 6400 back up and running next week but it won't be on the same board and it'll be using stock Intel cooling so my temps for that proc will be more in line I'd imagine.

On the other side of it I should have grabbed the screen's when I read the temps, I did not. 67 is around where the room temp hovers but it's a very large room and I honestly have no idea what the room temp was at the time. Given the location of my PC in relation to the temp sensor that I take my ambiant from and relative airflow around and through my case I'll maintain the idle temp bottomed out at 18c. Believe what you will.

And to whoever else may have took my original post the wrong way - I was NOT saying his temps were out of spec, I was saying they were high, especially for an E6300. I know well enough what the thermal limitations of these processors are. If you took it any other way I dunno what to tell ya.....

I'm sorry, but you're just not telling the truth and that's as blatant as I can be...Any processor, even at idle, generates heat. Now, if they're generating heat, they WILL be hotter than your ambient temp even with air cooling. My average ambient temp is around 22C...My idle temps are usually about 18-20c higher than my ambient temp...This would be the case for you too...There's just NO WAY on air that your idle temp is even coming close to your ambient temp, nonetheless falling below it...Just NOT POSSIBLE!

So, either A) You're lying...or B) There was some glitch in CoreTemp because I can 100% guarantee your processor wasn't running at 18C even at idle..

And as for you saying his temps are high...I'm not sure anyone should really be taking your information to heart when it comes to temperatures (please refer to my first paragraph as to why)...His temps aren't high. His temps are perfectly normal and if you knew well enough what the thermal limitations of these processors are, you'd see that.

Please don't tell me I'm lying when you don't know me personally. I know what I saw on my screen, using core temp. If it was a glitch in CT I'll accept that, yet I've never heard of it glitchin and 18c is what I saw on screen.

By your math then my idle temps on my 6600 should be idling at roughly 37.4c (using your low end) and they're not. I idle at 29-30c on my 6600 and when I get home this evening I'll post the screens of that if I remember to do it. As I really don't care what people on a 'net forum think, if I forget to do it oh well. ;)

Again I never said they were out of spec - I just said they were high based on my experiences with two faster versions of the same proc. I don't care one rip who takes it to heart or not. Given that, I'm not gonna argue the point anymore because, it's well, pointless.....

Mine 6300 @3.3 with Big Typhoon is at 55C Full Load @25 Romm Temp. About 44 Idle.

jonahex2099, why don't you re DL core temp, slap that 6400 back, take a screenshot to prove your claim. Then it would be the end of discussion. I would to that if I were you to maintain a credibility.

Good, no more arguing...we're right...you're wrong...AND you keep making excuses as to why you can't get the screenshots. You show me a screenshot of an E6400 idling at 18C on a Scythe Ninja, indoors with ambient temps of around 19c and I'll send you $100 through paypal...That's how confident I am that it isn't gonna happen.

Wasn't really an argument, and as I said don't really care. If I had the time or the patience to tear my box apart yet again I would, I don't, 'nuff said. :)

Because I don't give a rip and I've torn my machine apart enough in the last week. :D

Ok... I lol'd right there. kthxbye. LOL

I would do the extra chores just to keep anyone saying things about me !
How could you say you don't really care, then why post your temp at all at the first place ?

We post because we care :D

rittia1962, I used to live in East Lansing back in 1998, I got PIII 700 back then, I let my window open for a few hours while overclocking it in January, the next thing I heard was overclicking harddrive :D

You were reading a false temp, obviously either your motherboard sensor reading is wrong or the program is wrong, either way your NOT getting 18c at idle in a 67f room, period. No ones saying you didnt see it, we are saying you didnt ACTUALLY get it.

I'm guessing all he has to do is show the screenshot of core temp at 18C? I'd do it for $100 if I could. Remove heatsink, remove processor, reinstall heatsink, take screenshot, repeat above with current chip ....1 hr. max to do it all. That's a heck of an amount of money for a picture.

Rix2357, do you want to chip in $100 ? I'll send 100 too so theres 300 for a screen shot ! LOL...
But my guess is, that 300 won't be enough to make him take screenshot.

I'll see if I can get 18c with air cooling so you guys can send 200 to me LOL

LOL, Ya think??? ;)

Core temp 18C = 64.4 F

Room temp = 76 F.

I wish I had such good air cooling.

OP,
Temps look fine. I've used core temp, TAT, and the other intel utility and core temps give me my best temps: 41-44C idle, about 56C loaded under orthos. I do own a E6600 at 3GHz though. Despite my high temps, i have a hard time believing the readings are true(it's water not air cooled). Moral: put your hand on the heatsink, if the cpu is really hot you would know. Don't worry about it.

I request screenshots of this 18c idle. if no screenshots then u cant be taken seriously.

Post screenshots, I want to see this machine thats runs cooler than most any PC in the world.
