Core 2 Duo vs Core Duo?

I have looked over the 40% increase in speed when compared to a standard p4, but im planning on getting a dell laptop, and i was wondering what exactly of a difference will i see with a standard core duo than a core 2 duo? i havent really seen any comparisons between the 2 in terms of portable systems. Should i even wait for it to be implemented on laptops?

I don't think the Core Duo for laptops is anything special at all. It was (I believe) based on the Yonah core, and was something of a flop. The "real" Core architecture will be the Merom, which should come out in August.

Morem as in the Core 2 Duo for laptops right? cuz i heard that they use between 25-55watts which is low enough for laptops.

Are you sure about that date? Cuz i'm debating whether or not i should take advantage of the price drop of core duo cuz of the core2duo release, or should i just wait for the full implementation of core2duo?

Yonah was not a flop and was taking on and beat FX chips.

i would also like to know the core duo vs core 2 as i am buying a macbook and if performance between Yonah and Meron is that big , i will wait if Apple releases the new moddles in the WW show on Aug 7th.

Apple I'm sure will announce what will be used. If not there's a macworld coming up soon as well. We shall see.

Im trying to take advantage of no-tax week, thats why i seem a little impatient when trying to decide between coreduo and core2duo, i so suprised there isnt any research done between the two? But man, august, thats sooooo long.

Merom beats Yonah, but it's not by as large of a margin as you would think. Yonah was a huge step up from Dothan, but Yonah to Merom is far less drastic. There are things in which the 4mb l2 cache will shine, but overall they aren't that far off in performance. At this point i would say it's worth the wait, just because they are on the horizon.

And i am speaking from experience, i have a T7200 right now, and i came from a T2600. Despite the 166MHz shortfall, Merom is easily faster overall...

I would get a Merom over a Yonah. Just because you are getting newer technology to take your money further. Yonah is a great chip however.

Merom has roughly a 10% real world performance increase... maybe more in appliations heavy in SIMD instructions. So All your SSE will benifit greatly.

The Mojor improvment Merom bring over yonah...

Single Clock SSE instructions Vice Every 2 Clocks... That is "Double" the speed theoretically. Getting 2x the work done now...

Things like Audio / Video Playing , Recording, Compressing, Ripping all will be much faster when compared to a Yonah at the same clock speed. Even newer games will bennifit greatly.

SSE has been around since early 1999 with the release of the Pentium III. ALOT of software takes use of it now.

This is the one improvment that will make me get a "Core 2" over a Core 1. There are various other improvements as well... across the board. I guess the next biggest thing is The Core 2 arcitecture is a 4 issue wide vice 3... This is allowing one extra instruction to be processed in the same clock. Realworld, thats a 25% improvement...

No man, reverse everything and you've got it right. Conroe is based off Yonah. Yonah was so successfull that Intel decided to expand it to their entire line and not just keep it to laptops.

Umm... sorry man but that's wrong. Yonah is a dual core dothan with a higher FSB. Conroe/Merom/Woodcrest have little to do with yonah, past the fact that NGMA is slightly based off of mobile architechture. NGMA was in the pipeline way before Yonah was released... trust me since I was working on Yonah and Merom about a year before yonah launched and even before we started validating with Conroe. As for the flop comment.... that's BS. Yonah is great chip, as is Dothan, that got rid of all the flaws in single core. Also... you should see Merom being sold towards the end of august. This will be an easy launch since they won't need new hardware for it, it's a drop in to yonah capable laptops.

I don't understand why people are saying that Dothan was crap. It is an older chip now and for its time it was excellent. Yes, it doesn't have dual core, but let's remember it was released in early 2005!

some of you are forgetting that Core has been in development for years. Intel already knew their roadmap. Yonah on Date X, Conroe on date Y, merom on date Z, etc. it doesn't matter what sold or how much, that was their plan from the start. They didn't just say "hmm, yonah is selling. let's make something new now".

Id like to know as well. anyone have this info?

That really depends on what you are planning on doing with your laptop. If you are looking for something to replace your desktop... then I would wait for Merom. If you are just using your laptop for the typical things people use them for Word/Excel/E-mail/etc then it wouldn't be bad to go with Yonah (core duo). Though you might want to consider what Yonah prices will be after merom launches (late august).... paying tax later might not be that big of a deal if prices drop. If it's was me.... I would wait a month or two, provided I didn't NEED a laptop right now.

Back in the day:

Dothans can match AthlonFX San Diego's clock for clock.
Yonahs can match Athlon X2's clock for clock (and single core can only match Dothan's clock to clock).

By Deduction:

Yonah = X2 clock
Conroe = X2 * 1.2 (20% faster per clock on average)
Merom = LV Conroe = 1.2 * Yonah

I'm talking way out of my place and league. I really had no idea what I was talking about.

This is my problem , Stupid Apple decided to solder in their CPU's, so i cant just drop in a Meron. :(

Than you shouldnt make posts on things you dont know about, it will save having to explain the correct information to other people who may beleive what you said.

I highly doubt this. first off... Intel doesn't make CPUs that are balled so there isn't any way that you could solder on a CPU. Any links to back this one up?

I've seen pics of it...it looks like they're sodered. I know the built in RAM is sodered in as well.

Poncho, the cpu in a Macbook is soldered. Or at least appears to be.

Here's an image of the logic board from a Macbook Pro I found on Google.
I've pointed out the CPU.

I can image that would be rather difficult to desolder ;)

I stand corrected.... but let me just say that's the gayest thing that I have seen in a long time. Fucking apple... I swear. They have to make EVERYTHING annoying as hell. Lame...

if nothing else, apple always has to be completely proprietary

It's a notebook, they tend to be proprietary anyway.

But Apple desktops (iMac not included) are usually very non proprietary. standard 5.25 and 3.5 form factor drives, PCI cards, PCIe graphics, DDR2 ram, USB / Firewire, etc. Not sure on the PSU though.

Merom is the desktop version of Conroe. While Yonah did share a lot of P-M architecture (and Conroe/Merom still share some) there have been some big improvements along the way. I would personally get Merom.

Also, Yonah was not at all a flop (as stated before). It still outperforms any other mobile chip currently on the market.

Thanks a lot for the responses guys, i guess ill be waiting for a few more weeks for the merom then. I play some games and would like to run them decently, and from what i gathered its about a 20% performance diff between meorm and yonah? thats sounds worth it to me :D
