Core 2 Duo Overclock

I am sorry if this question is stupid, and I am sure with even basic knowledge I should be able to answer it myself, but I do not have much expertise in overclocking and I am at a loss. I have a Core 2 Due E6750 2.66 ghz. No matter what I do, I cannot go over 3ghz in overclocking this processor without my system hanging up (will not even get into windows). I have 2x1GB DDR2 800 PC2-6400 memory overclocked to about 850. I also have an MSI P6N SLI nForce 650i motherboard. I always see people with Core 2 Duos with stock speeds similar to mine who easily break 3ghz. I didnt know if it was something I am doing wrong or whether my system is just not meant to go any higher. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I'm not understanding something though, shouldn't I be able to go to 3.4ghz?
 
You're probably not changing your memory divider. Change it to 1:1 and go from there. Lock your PCI-E frequency.
