Core 2 Duo IHS

I've herd that removing the integrated heat spreader can give some nice results. I was browsing for some pictures on "naked" core 2 duo's. I found this picture(uploaded it to share site of coarse), and it makes the core 2 duo look insanly easy to remove the IHS. Has anyone tried this with the core 2 duo yet/results?

The problem with doing this is that the LGA775 retention mechanism relies on the IHS to hold the CPU into the socket. If you don't have the IHS, you have to run your computer on it's side so the CPU stay in the socket without tightening the HSF enough to crush it.

its pretty easy to remove, you just need to be careful. Use a real tourch, not a lighter, or a hot plate. You have to remove the retaining plate from your mobo, and the cpu will be pretty much held in by your heat sink/ water block. You can tape the edges to the socket so the cpu doesn't fall out though. Read my thread. Use 4-5 layers of electrical tape for "feet" the prevent your cooling method from rocking to one side and crushing the core. Removing the IHS will only help you if temps are a big problem. Like you're getting only 1 core prime stable and temps sky rocket and fail when you stress both cores. If you get any L628Bxxx stepping cpu, removing the IHS will definetly help you get 4ghz pi stable. Right now i'm @ 3850mhz priming @ 1.51v on water. I say its worth it if you want every last mhz in your cpu. My every last mhz seems to be 4110mhz, onl 4074mhz 1m pi stable though. Anyways, its good fun, and a heart pounding rush that first time you try the cpu to make sure you didn't boil it :D My latest results are the end of the thread.

Awesome, thanks for the link. I may end up trying this when I want to push past 3.6ghz.
 
OMG I would be way to nervous to do this. I was worried enough just lapping mine :cool: Best of luck to ya'll who do this though.
