i have illustrated the point. resistors do, for a fact, turn electricity into heat. there are varied ratings for them. ones that take 12v down to 5v for a fanbus, variable ones, or ones that are so strong they terminate the signal.

if its a matter if creating a circuit to it from your body, that cant be hard at all.

what else explains the fact ive felt a static shock from handling a resistor?

you can also attach a strong one to a small faraday cage / bag and defeat various anti-theft systems..but i have not tested that personally...but im aware that it does indeed work

so resistors DO absorb energy and turn it into heat.

it makes sense.


you might have discharged a location on your own body.. but that doesn't "ground" yourself as you say.. just cause you find a way to discharge electrons from a part of your body to another, in order to keep your body in a more neutral state doesn't mean you've "grounded" yourself..

you have to be at the same potential as the machine.. you have to touch the machine and stay physically connect.. by just always having a hand on it.. ot by using a static strap.



do any of you guys really know what a ground is??? cause it seems like some of you got a good idea, and are on the right track.. but some of you.. i can easily tell that you really don't know what electricians, engineers. etc mean by ground..

you can't just do it once my friend.. you have to be connected at all times.. your potential can change very easy.. you much remine connect to the computer.. what you're saying is true.. you can use a resistor if you're a a different potential.. touch the case with the other end of the resistor and perhaps discharge something. but once you let go and aren't connected to the case.. it doesn't mean jack shit anymore..

you don't need a resistor. just touch the damn case.. and stay touching it


there aren't specific resistors that take 12V down to 5V.. it depends on everything else on the circuit, you have voltage and current divisions everywhere..

you could use a voltage buffer somewhere to perhaps ensure that you always have 12V, then use a resitor to bring it down to 5V and use another voltage buffer to make sure other loads don't affect this drop..

the point is.. it's not as simple as your making it out to be.. but i'm not saying you're wrong.. you're on the right track is what i would say.. sort of.. i think

I bet you got your shock from a capacitor, not a resistor.

A stick is a resistor (a big one in fact) does holding a stick keep your static electrical potential anywhere close to ground? No.

I could have a hundred thousand resistors in my hands, both ends touching things and still build up several KV of static potential and kill a peice of electronics when I touch it.

Resistors do nothing unless there is a completed circuit (look up a open circuit, what it looks like and what it does.. nothing) to be electrically at ground, you must complete a circuit to ground.. eg a part of you must touch ground.

Heck read my earlier post, even with one of those wristbands on the guy got shocked. The wristband DOES NOT WORK.
