guys a little help, I need to copy about 15 VHS tapes (i assume 2hr or less each tape). I have a Hauppage WinTV card and a 120GB HD and a DVD burner. My question, can I hookup the VHS player the composit in on the card and capture the video? How would I capture the audio? My guess would be get a 2 composite to mini plug adaptor and run it to the line in on my onboard sound. I would then need to capture the video, hopefully using the Divx codec. I have showshifter installed (htpc software) that maybe I could use to capture and encode it all anyone know if it will work. Any1 know of anyother programs to try? Two hours of encoded video shouldnt be more that 1500MB or so if i do everything right, I hope. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

That's correct as far as the connections go. You can use either composite or S-Video. Then you are going to need one of those cables going from the left/right connectors on the vcr to your line in. Now as far as settings and programs, I'd like to know a little about this as well. I personally use VirtualDub with the settings found at Doom9 . The program is free, and it seems to work great except for the fact that I get a lot of dropped frames (around 1k after an hour and a half or so) running the high quality settings. My question is, what is optimal system config for recording at this level?

any1 else? will vdub capture audio from the ac97 codec and video form the tv card???

If they are commercial tapes, you may run into macrovision protection problems.

Yep, that'll work...as for software, I would suggest MyDVD from Sonic. Then you'll also have your DVD burning tools as well.
