Copying the MBR

Quick question that's going to need the knowledge [H] has. If I copy the MBR from a 500GB drive over to a 750GB drive will the partition remain 500GB, or will I have 250GB free?

I used Ghost to copy over and set active form my 500, and that worked, but the drive continually defaults to E:, while leaving all OS shortcuts referencing c: (of course) so effectively I boot my E: drive while still relying on my C: for all system files, and effectively wasting my time.

I know in acronis if you do a restore disk which includes the MBR, it takes the entire new disk.

The MBR isn't going to help in this situation. You need to use Ghost properly, aka, doing your imaging outside of the OS. That should leave the drive letter intact for the destination drive.

The MBR has nothing to do with the partition structure of a drive, that's stored in the partition table data on the first sector, sooo... doing this isn't going to be of much help.

Also, a big mistake people make with Acronis True Image when restoring images is, when they reach the source selection screen, they'll choose the partition in question and then check the box for the MBR also, which is entirely unnecessary and sometimes causes issues. The partition shown - the source you're trying to get restored - has all that info in it already. Just a tip...

If the OP made a proper image of the drive/partition and then removed the source drive from the equation, the target drive (in place of the source drive) should be working exactly the same, but only if you removed the source drive from the equation completely.
