I am by far not in need of a real extreme cooling solution at this point in time. I just have one computer with a moderate overclock in an Antec P182B case. The tri-cools don't do much to make me want to trust them though. The top one will upon startup, sometimes not start. All you have to do is tap it to get it started and its good to go, but my better half doesn't really pay attention like I would like.

I would like to replace the top two fans pretty soon. I like the Scythe Slipstream fans because they have a pretty high capacity, can be modulated with a fan controller, and are relatively quiet and cheap. However, someone said the sleeve bearings on this fan type make it less suited to being mounted horizontally. Is this the problem causing my tri-cool to not start correctly. How true/critical is this characteristic of sleeve bearing fans? Do I need to switch the top fan to maybe a Scythe S-Flex with much lower capacity and higher price?



 
I will tell you the S-Flex are awesome.

I have about 20 S-Flex SFF21F in my farm.

I use them on the back of the cases & on my True 120's Heatsinks.

They are excellent and very quiet.

Note - Newegg gives discount when ordering more then 3-5, so look into that.

 
$3.99 Yate Loons at jab-tech.com I say no more! well besides 78cfm if you don't need silent and want cooling there is your best bargain!

How much of a discount? Without a discount that's at least $400 in fans... :eek:

 
Sadly, it looks like my little purchase is going to have to be held off. I started this thread yesterday from work. When I went to get in my truck after work the tiny crack in the opposite top corner of my windshield had crossed most of the windshield. I guess the deformation from the 100 degree day we had must have gotten the crack going. I have a state inspection sticker for...you guessed it, June. This is a now problem unfortunately.

I will have to hold off leisure purchases like computer parts until I get a windshield and probably a new muffler for my truck. Yay.

 
I also have a P182 and found that the fans that came with the case were... um... crap. I just went to a local store here and picked up two of those Antec 120mm auto-temp fans. (I wasn't going to go online for fans :p) They work well on the top and rear exhaust. Have had them going for over a year now.

Hehehe I'm all about cooling so 78CFM for me is the desire. But you are right the medium's are I think 28 DB or are those the low speeds... regardless Yate Loons have always been great cheap fans!

+1 I have used several different brands of fans, but in the end I've settled on Yate Loons for my WC'ing rads, HSF fans and case fans. They are cheap and with a fan controller very quiet and dependable :D

Always remember: "quietness" is subjective, in other words, it depends on the personal opinion of the person doing the hearing. :rolleyes:

I think anything over 78 cfm on a modern computer WC'ing radiator is "overkill" anyway. Use the high speed Yates with a fan controller if you want more cfm. (case, air HSF, etc)

Oh yeah, while jab-tech is a good online supplier I think Petra's Tech Shop for WC'ing is the best, plus you're guarenteed genuine Yate Loons. (they also have air coolers, etc)

 
Rule of thumb is 30db is considered library quiet, some whirr but not loud. I think the 78CFM are 44db... Thus they are "Loud"

I get the 120mm low speed fans. I tried the 140mm fans as well. I love Yate Loon. Buy them from Jab Tech in bulk... like 10 or more... and they get real cheap.

note --- they have high speed fans as well, but I like the low speed. Make sure you get what you want.

Touche' on the bulk buyin' thing, I've always got my Yate Loons from Petra's at a rate of about $20.00 bucks/4x (D12SH-12, roughly $5.00 bucks a piece), but at 10x you can get them from jab-tech for around $3.10. (IMO, you can never buy too many fans:D)

They sound like the genuine Yate Loons and if they are, I'll have to take a look into it. ;)
