I'm working on making my computer more silent. Currently my MSI NX6600GT-TD128E is the loudest part of my system and I'd like to replace the stock HSF with another solution that would yield the best NOISE/TEMP ratio.

I'm currently looking at the following three products:

AC NV Silencer 6 rev 2

Which do you think will provide me the best cooling versus noise ratio, with emphasis on trying to reduce the noise?

i run my vf700al-cu at full speed and i cant hear the thing unless i take off the side of my case and put my ear dangerously close to the fan. the thing does a great job at cooling with little noise.
one point that not many people consider is this: when you upgrade cards, you will be able to take the vf700 off your old card and use it again. its very likely that the nv silencer will be specific to your current card.
 
If you have an AGP 6600GT don't forget to take in to account the STASIS Thermal IceStorm NV43AGP heatsink setup. By default it is already quieter than most stock setups at 27db, and with a fanbus, can be run at levels as low as 16db. :)

I have PCI-E, but thanks for the warning and reference.
 
Any other voters? The margin between the two is still small enough that I don't know for certain which is the better recommendation.
 
Bump.

So far it looks like the Zalman. One consideration is that the NV Silencer does vent the hot air directly outside the case at the back bracket. Would the Zalman still perform as well? I don't have airconditioning and it's currently 88 degrees ambient in my computer room. Does this have any impact?

Currently my stock cooler with AS5 applied is 53 degrees at idle, it's 80 under full load. During the winter months I get down to 45 degrees.

I've a mid-small sized aluminum tower that has one front 80mm case fan, one back 80mm case fan and then the fans in my power supply. I can add one more fan to the front.

Heres an idea...

Try water cooling :). I finally did it and its SILENT. I have two 6600gts running SLI and both GPUs have water blocks along with CPU. Runs 42C constant. Hope this helps!

What kit did you use? Can you provide some water cooling advice to a noob?
 
i like the nv just cause it looks good and cools well never used a zalman one so cant comment on it
 
I haven't used either but from hands on experience

Zalman products = teh good
Arctic Silencer = sucks
 
I live in Florida with no air conditioning, and with the Zalman VF700-Cu at 12V my idle / load temps are 59 / 74 degrees C (which is 10 / 15 degrees lower than with the stock cooler) on an MSI 6600GT AGP VIVO.

I did not use a kit. Here is what I got:
(2) Thermaltake Aquarius II VGA Water Block (For GPUS) I did not cool ram because stock it was not, and I am not OCing yet.
DangerDen TDX 3/8" Copper Water Block (For CPU)
Danger Den Black Ice Micro Dual 80mm Radiator
Swiftech MCP655™ 12v Water Pump


Hope this helps out. I did not use a resevoir, I will be adding one when I hack my case apart to put the radiator at the top. I just wanted to get the computer and running :)
 
I'm going to stick with Air Cooling for the moment, I'll continue to research water cooling before I take the leap.

I just purchased the Zalman VF700-cu and I'm very impressed. Even though 200 hours have not passed with my AS5 compound yet, I'm running load at close to what my previous idle was. After running 3dmark05 with continuous looping, I'm not exceeding 58 degrees where as with the prior stock HSF I was typically around 78 degrees. I was amazed, we're talking about a 20 degrees drop in temp.

I also was leary of the clearance on the NV Silencer 6 rev 2 if I went SLI, as I don't use and ASUS board. When looking, it looked as if I'd be too tight a fit for dual NV Silencers. No problem with two Zalmans.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions, I really appreciate the help, and the vote that showed me the correct way to go. :)
