While my setup is fairly standard and not overclocked heat is a problem.
( Setup is a P4 2.8 W/ 1Gb PC2100, 400W PCF PSU - 6x 80mm fans inc psu and cpu )
With idle running around 40-45C and running Far Cry / Call of Duty etc hits 50-55C
And on a hot summer day this can raise by another 5-10C
I don't have the cash to throw at a decent Water system and so have spent some time and come up with the following plan
Replace the Cpu Cooler with a Coolermaster Hyper6 KHC-V81 Cooler using artic silver 5 thermal paste, sticking 2 Vantec Tornado 80mm fans on ( noisy I know but thats the price im gonna have to pay ).
The cut a hole in the side of my case and place a DELTA 120mm AFB1212VHE fan there sucking air into the case, then using some ducting connect a tunnel from the 120mm fan to the intake fan on the heatsink and then another tunnel from the exaust of the heatsink fan to an exaust fan on the case.
Creating one long wind tunnel from a 120mm side fan through the cpu heat sink and out the back of the case.
Various parts of this were made up from guides and reviews read in various places and combining ideas.
Known problems are going to be
1/ the 120mm fan sucking crud directly onto the cpu.
Planned to add filters which I know will reduce performance but overall better than dead fans every 3 months
2/ Weight the cooler master tower with 2 fans on will weigh 3 times over the intel reccomended weight for a cooler.
Planned on setting up support rigging in the case, still a little dangerous but will look at closely
3/ Airflow, sticking all this kit in will somewhat block up the rest of the case and air circulation with the tunnel sleeving and the size of the cpu, as is the ambient temp in the case is 30C and am concerned as to what hindrance this will all have on the rest of the system.
Havent planned anything about this.
Any feedback, changes to my plan or alternative ideas are most welcomed
Regards
