Hi im looking to liquid cool a 1st generation ps3 (yes i know many of you out there are pc gamers so please put aside your console hatred and and show me a lil lovin!) I would like to use a koolance exos 2.5. Im pretty sure this would be safe to use however I can save myself some money with a exos 2. so my question is would a exos 2 be safe to use ( I know it wont be as great as a 2.5) and also are there any other external cooling units that are affordable and as good as an exos 2.5? Im assuming an exos 2.5 is good, feel free to correct me if its not.

Thanks for the help!

The exo 2.0/2.5 are both aluminium, so it wouldn't be advisable to use with any copper components. It also has a MRSP of almost $400 which is more than the console itself, and probably a bit louder.

You would still need a block for the unit like this one (though it's copper, so an aluminium radiator isn't preferable), some fittings/tubing and then a way of powering it and the fans off the mains. It's a triple 120mm radiator, which would probably be a bit overkill for this purpose.

Something like the EXT-440CU also by koolance would probably do a better job, as it's full copper. You can replace the fan with a quieter one if you wish. It also says in the manual theres an extra adapter which can be purchsed to run off AC. WHich would make it look a bit neater.

Iv seen the EXT-440 a couple times and thought it might be a bit small, also there are some used exos that are actually cheaper than the 440. So where Im at right now is 1. will the 440 be enough? 2. Will the exos 2.0 work better than a 440 3. are there any other suggestions for external cooling units? Iv seen a fanless zalman but was unsure how good it would be 4. are there any external water cooling users out there looking to get rid of thiers?

oh yea those blocks are a pain to get, i had one on order for 6 month and it never came so ill probably end up getting two single blocks.

Thanks

1. Probably yes. I mean, you aren't going to be overclocking it.

2. The 3 fan model would probably a bit better, but it's made of aluminium, which is problematic as the blocks are made of copper and these two materials don't coexist well together unless you use lots of chemicals that might cause other problems especially long term.

3. Most of the other all in one units are also aluminium like the zalman (resorator XT?), which brings up the whole galvanic corrosion issues again. Most of those all in ones have aluminium blocks which come with them. If you could find an aluminium waterblock for the PS3 that fitted then all should be fine.
As for other suggestions, thats not really my area of expertise, as all I do is custom loops. :D Which is an alternative.

Seems like it should be possible to rig an H-50 or something similar as a cheaper alternative to a full loop here. I can't imagine a PS3 having more than 200w to dissipate, and a triple rad is in the 700-800w range, which would be complete overkill.

Yea I agree, Its so hard finding out what the ps3 puts out. I would like the EXT-440 because as the princess said its copper and better with copper blocks. I just wanna make sure itll do the job

Ok, so update, heres what I found out.

1st gen PS3
GPU process: 90nm
CPU Process: 90nm
Power supply 380w

And this power usage during various activities

Standby: 1 watt
XMB menu: 171-176 watts
Playing game: 195-209 watts
BD movie play: 173-178 watts

Does this mean anything in terms of what i need to cool it? Again I just wanna make sure the EXT-440 will be strong enough to remove all the heat, it gets quite hot playing after a few minutes and then is sustained throughout the gaming session even with the stock fan running at full capacity.

Yes, an EXT-440 will be stong enough. I can't imagine a PS3 putting off more then 100w of heat, and that thing should deal with atleast 200, more likely 250w of heat. Just remember, copper rad means copper block, alum rad means alum block unless you like corrosion.
