Cooling mistake

Hey guys, I was wondering if someone could help me out. I have a pretty basic cooling question and a friend of mine pointed me to these forums.

A couple days ago my PC overheated, I ordered up a cpu Fan/Heatsink to replace the stock heatsink. I figured this would fix the problem, but it seems I ordered the wrong replacement. My motherboard is listed as an intel D945GBI (from gateway), I think it's listed as a D945GBO on intel's site.

Anyways, I was under the impression the board is a Socket 775 ( the cpu is a Pentium 4, 3.0ghz), however when I got an Arctic cooling Freezer 7 Pro, it would not ft. The bolts would not line up and more importantly the cpu is angled, where the new fan doesn't appear set up for that.

So I guess I don't have a Socket 775? Can anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?? I reaaaally appreciate it :) !
 
Well.. lets see whatcha have.. We are going to need a few pics of your motherboard.. Specifically, a shot of the cpu socket area would be helpful..

it seems like it is a btx motherboard so I don't think really think any cooler will work besides the stock one.
 
Well i'm not positive, but that looks an aweful lot like a socket 775.

Download cpuz and run it to find out what your socket is for sure. Here is the link for your convenience: http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

The motherboard itself looks like it might be BTX form factor or some other strange standard, which might be part of the problem. Any one else with ideas?
 
Im pretty sure it is a LGA775 socket. The problem is the mounting points for the CPU. Aside from the weird CPU socket orientation, I think the OP is not going to find a GOOD cooling solution up to par with todays cooling standards. A suggestion would be to contact the manufacture of the motherboard to see if they make any special adapter brackets to accomodate todays standard CPU coolers.
 
Do not run the PC without a CPU cooler!

Call me crazy, but I can't see anyway to mount any kind of cooler. There are no notches of hooks on the bracket to mount one or any screw holes in the mobo?!

How was the stock HSF mounted? Can you show some pics?
 
TriStang, don't run the computer without the CPU cooler! Please!

If you can manage to get the stock cooler back on there with some better thermal interface material and clean up some of the cables inside so they don't block air from moving through the case, you should be doing better for now. Also, take into consideration where you place the computer - don't but it next to heat vent or radiator, don't cover it with an electric blanket (or any blanket for that matter), etc. I know it's common sense, but I thought I might as well throw that out there ;-)
 
Thanks for the responses! I shot off a quick e-mail to ArticCooling to see if they had any adivce. I'm gonna have to look at intel's website tomorrow. I guess if it comes down to it I could put the original heatsink and go from there. I'll keep you guys updated!

Even their site does not show any active support for this board. Most parts are pre-order with an estimated wait of 3-5 weeks. I think his board might have came with a PASSIVE cooler.

My suggestion.. Save yourself the HEADACHE of trying to rig this motherboard up with a CPU cooler on an older chipset.. Update your motherboard. It might cost a hundred dollars, but it will save you a big headache. Here is a little article with the micro BTX boards.. Dang, I guess I'm gonna hook up the old heatsink then and go from there. Stupid BTX! :) Again, I really appreciate all the responses. If articcooling does get back to me, I'll let you all know.

I'm stupid and completely missed those mounting holes, heh.

You could probably find a cooler that has a mounting bracket with many positions on it and try that out. The angle of the HSF will not really matter, as long as the CPU cores are covered by the base plate of the cooler.
A cooler with a mounting bracket similar to this one maybe. I know this is a VGA cooler, but if you scroll down a bit you will see the type of bracket I mean.

Also, measure the distance between the mounting holes diagonally and get back to me.

EDIT: Check out this fan. It may help you keep the temps at a reasonable level with that passive sink you have if you direct it right on it. No guarantees though.
 
Grab yourself a cheap fan. 80mm, 92mm, 120mm...whichever fits best on top of that stock cooler. Drill some holes into the side of the heatsink fins where the holes on the fan line up with the heatsink. Zip tie that bad boy on there, making sure the airflow direction of the fan pushes air downward. That should help considerably with your temps if no alternative cooling solutions are available. Also apply some Arctic Silver 5, or some other good thermal interface material.

That's a simple, easy fix that will probably work quite well for your situation.
 
It's certainly socket 775, you can see LGA775 printed right on the board in the first picture.

If that pic below is the stock heatsink, you could just pick up fan of the proper size and find a good size screw to attach it to the stock heatsink.

Drywall screws work pretty well to bite between the fins on the H.S.
 
I'm surprised that BTX would be an issue; I would have thought that any LGA775 motherboard would have the same heatsink mounting, just that BTX systems are organised differently.
 
I had a very similar problem. My Dell 9150 CPU fan going off like a jet engine when ever I was under the slightest CPU load. The fan / shroud / heatsink assy shown in your pics is very similar to what I have. It is a full BTX motherboard with similar heatsink mounting hole positions as yours.

Being a Dell, no temperature sensing programs would read the CPU temperature so I could only guess it was going over temperature very quickly and thus trying to compensate with increasing the fan speed.

I was really sus of the heatsink fitting and couldn't find any alternate after market heatsinks that would fit as a replacement. I was close to engineering my own 'custom' heatsink base when I thought I would lap the heatsink to see if that would help. I found out the heatsink base was so warped it was only touching the edges of the CPU !!!

Now, with a good contact with the heatsink and some good thermal paste, the fan only runs at idle all the time, even under very heavy load for hours.

I promised myself I will never buy 'proprietry' PCs ever again.
