As some may know I have been consolidating GPUs into 3 or 4 pcie lane mobos and oddly enough some cards with OPEN CASES, began to throw Unstable flags. I was wonder what the hell was up. I put a row of 3 120mm fans over the cards to suck the hot air up and out and WALLA stable for 2 days now.

The case did not feel all that hot when i held my hand over it, but when i added the fans it felt like a hair dryer coming off the fans. This told me even though I had 3 fans in the front of the case the air was not rising fast enough. So I added the trubo option.

Just a friendly tip if you see you suddently are getting failed WUs
 
I have 3 GPU in a closed case with a ton of fans, and if I didn't have a 60cfm blowing directly on the top of the cards, they would probably all overheat.
 
Yeah, I have had similar experiences. Especially with multiple 9800GX2s next to each other, placing at least 1 fan over the intended exhaust area near the back of the motherboard, where the card screws in) helps temps a lot.

If you have multiple GPUs, you should consider adding a fan to aid exhaust directly over the card, especially as the ambient temps rise.

The case has poor cooling so I leave the side cover off, and the 140mm fan helps. The card fans are all set at 100% as well.
 
I put a 140mm fan pulling the air off of them and one blowing air directly into the front of them and that seemed to help quite a bit. I am still not very happy with the temps, but have not had issues with WU failing.

Also someone else in the DC forums mentioned that putting a folded up piece of paper between the 9800 GX2s helps some too.

i said it.. :p

put the folded up piece of paper between the cards in the back toward the fan section of the 9800GX2.. it doesnt need to be insanely thick.. just enough to separate the cards so that the fans can pull in fresh air.. but this only works if the cards are stacked directly on top of each other..
 
For cooling, I just went redneck style. Side of the PC off and a 8-10" desk fan blowing right on the cards. Crude but effective.
 
My folding rig is inside a Norco RPC-470 so I can rack mount it.

It came with 4 x 80mm fans that just scream. I took them out and replaced with YL 80mm Med Speed fans. Temps rose more than I am comfortable with so I put them back. It's going into a server cabinet and hopefully the cabinet can disappate some of the sound from the fans. Temps are more reasonable now though.
 
My rig is mounted to a piece of plywood and set on a shelf in my rack. My 4*9600's are running quite nicely and have been for several months now.

Well after figuring out how to correctly (using Precision) set the fan speed, my temps are actually very reasonable now. All 6 GPUs are in the high 60's to 70. I may put the Yate Loon fans back in so I can drop the noise back down to a very reasonable level.

lol thats not redneck style.. thats the old athlon xp overclocking style cooling.. lol.. 8-10" desk fan was the only way to cool an athlon xp 1700+ back in the day.. there was no such thing as heatpipe heatsinks during that time.. god i remember my jet engine heatsink i had on my athlon xp 1700+ when i was running it at just over athlon xp 2000+ speeds.. could hear that fan all the way across the house which was a good 50-60ft away..
