Cooling a DVR??

Ok, I've got a DVR that records my security cameras. The damn hard drive started getting errors and I replaced it. Now I'm erasing it with killdisk and boy it is HOT! When I get the replacement, I thought about adding it to the system but the heat buildup scares me and it could be the reason the first one failed so now I'll have 2 HDs.

The hard drives mount to the bottom of the DVR case so cooling is a real problem not to mention it only has one tiny 40mm fan to cool everything blowing out from the side. The only clearance is at the top

I'm looking for cooling solutions including what I think will have to be cutting the case on the roof to bring in some fresh air but I can only hook up 2 fans so I'm thinking 2 120s but where to place them and should they both blow in or one in one out, not sure.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Here is the diagram. I know I know. It is awesome work. No I don't offer classes.

Since you are already planning on cutting into the top, if it were me I would use BOTH of the 120mm's topull hot air up-n-out of the case - and I would place several several several vent holes in the bottom, with a nice rectangular grid of holes right beneath each hard drive in particular. The only real advantage to 1 fan blowing in is it takes some load off of the one pulling out; with venting holes where you need it, 2x 120's will be fine to keep the heat out...

2 120 mm fans should be plenty to keep this thing cool. As artless1 said, have the two fans at the top of the case, and create venting holes in the bottom as well as the sides. Have the fans spin at like half speed and the inside of the case will be cooler than ever before :)

hey texmaster, just wondering how ever=thang has worked out for ya on this project, LMK

have a good one
