Yup, a BlackIce Extreme III, DDC-12v pump, clear 5 1/4" res, and 12ft of 3/8" tygon tubing are on the way. *cheer*

Since I _cannot_ get my hands on 3 x 120mm Papst fans anywhere...
It looks like i've gotta go with 3 x Panaflo M1A's to suck air through the Rad at the top of my case. Either those are L1A's. Would anyone recomend NOT going with the M1A's due to noise?

I do have a fan controller, so I will be able to throttle back the RPM of these fans to reduce noise. If they're gonna be noisy even if they are throttled back, please let me know :eek:

What i'd like to hear from those who have a 3 x 120mm rad with fans going ... what kinda fans, and at what 'speed' do you run them at with your fan controller? speed = dial position i guess.

personally, i see no reason to get L1A's and be limited, when i can throttle back the M1A's with the fan controller.

Also, total newbie question here:

With a fan controller...
When you dial, lets say from full speed (6 o'clock) to 3/4 ( 3 o'clock) does the fan speed decrease in minute incriments, or does it only decrease once the dial hits a certain spot (3 o'clock)?
 
more-or-less smooth variation between minimum (about 7, like the page says) and about 11. mine cannot get above 11.2 with 2 panaflo U1A fans attached.

now, one thing that other people may or may not get, is that sometimes you will get little jumps in performance, as a results of the pulse modulation circuitry of the controller, and the circuitry in the fan that switches current flow between various poles of the motor, interacting with each other.

it's really not THAT big a deal (in my opinion), but there will probably be some fan speeds that just won't happen: you'l have to choose above or below.

with nice quiet fans like yours, it shouldn't even matter, really.
 
I have 2 Evercool Aluminum 120mm fans. ~80cfm @ 2000rpm. Pretty quiet compared to the stock HSF on the a64. I was bored and hooked them to the fan controller on the Lian Li, and they go all the way to low with no problems and with even less noise. Running full tilt though, they don't make enough noise to bother me so I just have them always on 12v now.

my video card, the gainward 6800gt Golden Sample apparently churns out a whopping 60.3 DBA

Now, i knew it was 'loud' before i bought it.

I didnt know just how loud that really was.
Doesnt help that it's two tiny fans putting out that noise. real high pitched. link

EDIT: Hence, i've ordered water coolin gear ;)
 
I'm not terribly sure about that.... I've run a panalfow M1A through a BIX at 5v which is very slow and very silent. It had zero stalling problems.

As a side note, at 5v, M1A's run nice and quiet, and at 7v they are still pretty quiet. My favorite thing about them though, is the fact that they will still start at 5v

Heck, DangerDen would normally suggest Papst fans for this Rad, but they are out, and wont be getting any until May :(

So... if a quiet Papst fan can do it, a M1A can sure as heck !
 
Well, i recieved my goods yesterday at work.
BIX3, DDC-12v pump, clear 5 1/4" res, and 12ft of tygon 3/8 ID tubing.
also, they accidentally packed a Hydor L25 pump in there. I called DD and they said keep it (as the cost of shipping would soak up the cost to replace for them) freebie! ... not that I have a use for it :)

Anyhow, this is one nice looking Rad. (it's blue, black wasnt available) ... i cant wait to start the process of mounting / modding the top of my case to make er work.

I've got an Antec P-160, with the top two bays empty (that's with the 5 1/4" clear DD resevoir installed) .... i'm still not sure which route I will go in terms of Rad placement;

#1. rad / fans completely external with hoses / pump / fan(s) wiring
entering case only

or

#2. rad 'internal' with fans 'external'; fans suck air up through the rad
which is inside case (the rad being semi-recessed, to have
decent room between it and the top of the Power Supply) while the
fans are actually outside the case in some kind of enclosure /
shroud to force the air being pulled to come through the rad from
inside the case.


Any of you have experience with both setups, and can offer some advise?

One thing i wonder about option #2 is, will the heat from the Rad, even though most of it, I would hope, is being pulled away by the fans, cause the PSU to get too hot? If this option is chosen, should I insert some seperation metal in the top of the case, and have some tubing holes cut, along with pump wiring allowance? It sure sounds more fun / challenging to fab up / install / mod the case than just mounting the rad like in #1 ;)

If a metal seperation is not required for PSU heat purposes, would it not keep the air cooler (for the Rad) to have a seperation, and air venting for room-temp air to be sucked through the rad in liue of case-temp air? (venting either in sides of case, or through the front 5 1/4" bays)

Okay, so i went home at lunch today, and tested each M1A i recieved. all working fine.

The airflow these things pump out at full speed is awesome. at the lowest speed, it's pretty darn good still. However, i've gotta admit, the motor could be quieter. For the airflow though, it's pretty impressive.
I cranked the fan up, with it standing on my case, and it was being pushed along by the airflow! ;)

Anyhow, what I really wanna know is; what do ya'll use between your fan and Rad? Some generic rubber washers from the corner hardware store or what? i'd like to eliminate as much vibration as I can.

I've got a shroud made out of plexi and weatherstripping ad that is nice. But i also have the fans hard mounted to the case as well.

if you really want to quiet those panaflows down, 5v em. Or, get a toggle switch and wire it up so that one way is 12v for high demand sits and one way is 5v for low-demand
 
so long as you securely fasten your fans to your rad, then there is no real need for gasket material for sound deadening reasons.

i have tried mine with and without gaskets, and there was no noticeable difference.

i DID make up some packing to plug the gaps at the two narrow ends of the rad, between the fans and the rad, to eliminate some waste airflow, but other than that i saw no need.

now, if you insist on putting in somthing in there to deaden vibration, i would suggest cutting yourself a full sized gasket out of a sheet of cork gasket making material from your local auto parts shop.

ink up the rad, and press it on paper to make a rough cutting template, then use some rubber cement to put the paper onto the cork, then use good scissors to cut both the paper and cork, according to the ink print.
 
oh yeah: if you want to see some neat airflow, then check out delta FFBxxxxEHE fans. both my 92 mm units and my 80 mm units are capable of hovering slightly on wood or vinyl flooring.

give them a little bump, and they slide right along.
