Didnt know whether to put this in cooling section or this but was just wondering if there would be a way to cool my graphics card further than already. I have a Antec Sonata III 500 Black 0.8mm cold rolled steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with the fan in the back only. It has the heatsink fan as well.

My problem is I am currently running the graphics card fan at 90% and when I am playing Crysis it will overheat. Not often but looking for a way to fix this. The card usually runs about 66-70C playing Crysis on high with 90% fan. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
 
we have a thermaltake duorb on it, 36 idle 55 load hasn't overheat and infact it's oc'd check sig
 
It sounds like you can increase your fan speed all you like, but the heat isn't being "escorted" out of your case due to an airflow issue. You might try a slot fan cooler like this one, to help remove the heat buildup. A good intake somewhere would definitely be helpful as well to get more cool air into the case.

I've got the Visiontek 4850 that runs in the 50c range on 45% fan, and stock fan speed puts it at 85c. I do personally think the stock coolers on these things just aren't that fantastic, but they do a good enough job you shouldn't be having overheating issues in a properly setup case.
 
Mod an intake fan in there somewhere. Maybe on the side, right above the video card.
 
Thanks all for the help, think ill try all those suggestions and see what happens. Ill do a slot cooler as well as ziptying a fan to it. Also I looked at the Accelero S1 Rev 2, how do you install it? It just looks like a giant heatsink.
 
After market GPU coolers are a great thing, but they're not without risk, and depending on your manufacturer, you can void your warranty (some allow it). Now this certainly isn't always true, but typically you really don't want to change it unless you're planning to OC the card.

You would want to post your specific card, but I believe most of the 4850's just have a backplate on the card with 4 screws (kind of an X-shape with a square in the middle). You just remove those, and then gently wiggle the HSF from side to side while applying gentle upward pressure to remove it. Then you clean the GPU, apply new thermal paste (some comes with the Accelero I think) and attach the new cooler. It's not as bad as it used to be, but you can still permanently damage the card if you're not careful.

The ziptying a fan was only for the Accelero S1. Don't ziptie a fan to your card. You could also try running without the side panel and seeing if that helps - it would at least let you know if ventilation is the issue anyway.
 
Thanks for the help, I was thinking of going for two AOC FC-2000. Is that work? Will they provide more cooling with two or screw each other up? I am looking to get the most cooling possible out of them so I dont mind getting even three. Also sorry if any of my questions are dumb, I have no clue about alot of this stuff.
 
You can mount another 120mm fan on the front of the hard drive cage (there are four screw holes there), which would blow cool air from the front intake across the video card. It might be a tight fit with the 4850, but there shoud be enough clearance unless the power connector gets in the way. I haven't bothered to do it yet my Sonata II.

my acelero keeps it at 40c idle, and 47 load, with a 120mm fan on it

No worries man. Everyone here started out knowing a lot less than it starts like you know now. ;)

If you can't get a standard sized 120mm fan up front for intake, you can probably fit a slim like this one. Even if it's just hung up with some ties or something it would probably help quite a bit.

Very silent, 37c idle... 46c load... can't ask for more!
 
I have an Antec Sonata III and a Radeon 4850, and I placed a 120mm fan in the front intake to keep it cool. There are mounting holes for the fan on the back side of the hard drive cage.

Yes, it doesn't look like a good spot, but the fan actually draws in a lot of air, and feeds it right on the video card. My idle temps are around 70C, and the card never tops 80C at load. I am using the stock cooler.

Yeah, it's a tight fit to place the fan in-between the card and the cage, but it can be done. Just put a tight bend in the PCIe power connector before you plug it into the video card.
 
question... how hard is it to put on a Accelero onto the 4850???
anyone know if this would void the warranty on a VisionTek 4850???
reason i wanna put an aftermarket cooler is because... everything else in the computer runs below 40C... but when i check the GPU temp... itz like 70-72C idle and 80+C when running games and such... so i would like to cut down the temp on the card... so the whole system would be at the same temp ( or around that )

Yea Keyman it runs really hot, see if you can raise the fan on it manually, it should help a bit. It is usually set to like 14% so see if you can raise it. Also thanks Oldie, im going with that fan for the front to help with cooling so hopefully the pci coolers and that help.
 
I set my fan to 40% , (not loud at all can't hear my computer period) it idles around 49/52C an 62C under load , while i'd love to get a aftermarket cooler i run on a MATX board an need every slot in there lol
 
alright then... but first... how do i change the fan speed manually? and just being pain in the ass again... which manufacture will allow u to put on a Accelero onto the 4850 without voiding the warranty? i know i already have the VisionTek 4850 but it will be a useful information for the future!

I recommend the GFXChilla over the Accelero. The Chilla is very cheap (20 bucks!!) and does an amazing job. My 4850 + chilla idles in the low 30s.
 
As far as I know, no manufacturer will still honor your warranty after modding the card. Modding includes replacing the fan, so you're out of luck on this one.

No ATI one, anyway. Some of the nvidia manufacturers do (evga maybe? not sure)

Does any other place carry the GFXChilla in the US except ncixus.com? They have it for $19.94 but shipping is $14.12. :p

WHAT!? idle at low 30s!? did u just do a bolt on installation and did not change any setting at all? and does this thing make any noises at all? is it possible to change the fan on the GFXChilla? and what temp do u get when it is under load? below 60C!?

just putting 2 quotes together... so basically u guys are saying that no ATi GPU manufacture will honor a warranty when u change the fan on the card right? cause that would sucks! whatz the point of buying VisionTek then! cuz other brand was on sale! lol

VisionTek has a lifetime warranty. Thats why you would buy from them. You don't need to mod the card to get it cool, upping the fan to 30-40% drops the temps significantly without increasing noise much. Of course, you could always just let the card do its job and not worry about the temp ;)

oh yeah... quietness is always the first thing in my mind too lol
and i believe the loudest thing in my computer right now is the 4850 lol
because the rest of the computer is quiet as hell and i m loving it :D
i know i can let the card do it job and leave it alone and be careless about it...
but the thing is there are other parts of the computer that i m afraid the 4850 will cook them up lol

The temperature the card runs at has nothing to do with the amount of heat it creates. Increasing the fan speed will only serve to lower the card's temperature. If your case temp is high, then increasing the card's fan won't help any. Unless you are going to overclock, just don't worry about the GPU temp.

I've done the fan fix and have also run the 4850 without it and so far I haven't had any issues with overheating, lockups or artifacting. I have fairly good airflow in my case, which does seem to help. There's really no reason to mod this card just to get idle temps down to under 50c, but if it makes you feel better then do it.:)

It is just a replacement heatsink. It can fit 2 full sized 80mm fans if you need to replace the stock ones. I am using the stock ones. No setting changes required. You will need to clean the gpu first and apply some thermal paste. I used AS5 (Artic Silver 5). The kit comes with heatsinks for the VRAM and voltage regulators, I didn't use them. The stock heatsink doesn't cool them either - it insulates them (you'll see the pads when you take it off). Under full load it gets to high 40s, low 50s, depends on the time of day. :p
