Coolest running processor?

Im working on a project and I need a processor that runs as cool as possible. Specifically it needs to be a socket 478, intel. At newegg, it seems that my only 478 choices are P4's and Celeron D's. If I understood correctly, the Celeron D doesnt run much cooler than the P4.

This processor will mostly be used for streaming files over a wireless network, and internet browsing. Hence, it doesnt need to pack much punch, I just need it to run as cool as possible. Do I have any other options?
 
What kind of case do you have? It's good to know the architecture of your case to know what kind of auxillary cooling.

Also, what is your budget?
 
the case actually an old vintage stereo receiver that i am modding. it will always be on, and will be placed in a location where it needs to be as silent as possible. fans are going to be kept to a minimum and possibly under volted.
 
I think there may be some Pentium M's that are on the s478 socket? I'm not real sure here. I remember something about originally have something like 479pin and being a different socket and then later a regular compatile 478socket version was released?

Do some research, if so this would be the lowest power/heat cpu by a huge margin.
 
The coolest running p4 would probably be the 1.4 mobile northwood but good luck finding one now. It might be possible on ebay. Also these don't have heatspeaders on them so you have to be carefull in choosing your cooling.
 
thanks for the suggestions guys. the P4 M sounds like the best option. ill check ebay and see what i can find.

the mobo that this will go on is from a shuttle, and says "Pentium 4 & Celeron 400/533/800MHz FSB/Socket 478"

i wont have a problem putting in a Mobile P4 right?

While Pentium M is technically a S478 part, it's not the same S478 as P4, they're electrically and functionally different and not compatible.
S479 is much the same purpose as S603 vs. S604, add a useless pin so you can't put it into an imcompatible motherboard by accident.

Asus makes a converter that lets you run a Pentium M on some of their Pentium 4 boards.
I'd imagine the original poester already has the board though or he probalby wouldn't be looking for low power S478, so that might or might not be an option.

Asus CT-479 adapter
I think they run about $40-50 and typically include eveything you need execpt the CPU itself (adapter itself, heatsink, grease, mounting hardware)

That will let you run a Pentium M (Banias or Dothan) on the listed compatible motherboards.

If you just want to run a Pentium 4 M (low voltage Northwood), you don't need anything other than the S478 motherboard. The lack of a heatspreader makes mounting the Heatsink a bit more difficult. Most people like to grind down the plastic motherboard mounting brackets the proper amount.
 
Thanks for the link and help. Now I need to decide which direction I want to go. Whether to sacrifice some temps and go with the easy way out, or get the Mobile processor w/ adapter. I like things simple as possible, so I might just go with a Celeron D or a P4. Decisions like this are a pain.

This is a good option too, this might be my ticket out. Hmmm...
 
If you are going to go with a P4-M you need to be sure that your motherboard supports it. Also, most P4-Ms are going to run at a 12X multiplier, their minimun for speedstep, and if you can lower the voltage to say 1.3v then it should run rather cool.
 
the P-M adapter only works with certain Asus motherboards supposedly... b/c you need BIOS support and Asus is the only one to make a BIOS to support their adapter/P-M

If you get a P4-M, when you put it in a desktop motherboard it defaults to the lowest multiplier (12x)... so if you have an 800FSB (865/875) mobo it will run at 2.4Ghz.....
or if you put it in an 845 mobo with no FSB controls you could be stuck at 1.6Ghz (12x133)

IF you get say a 3.06Ghz P4-M (gives you HT)... and you have a decent motherboard/ram you could overclock the FSB to like 255 and get it back to its default CPU, which still should run fairly cool, and you should have great memory/FSB bandwidth.

The Pentium 4-M (aka "Mobile Pentium 4-M") only goes up to 2.6GHz. The faster ones are the "Mobile Pentium 4" (no M) which use much more power than the P4-M:

P4-M: 20.8-35W TDP
Mobile P4: 59-88W TDP

Mobile P4s (without the M) are just low voltage Northwoods or Prescotts with a lamer speedstep and a maximum 533MHz FSB. P4-M are Northwoods with much better speedstep and 400MHz FSB only.
 
If your motherboard has the options, underclock and undervolt a regular p4. The regular p4 compared to a p4-m won't have speedstep, but since you say it is a file server and won't be used for anything else, it won't matter much.

Celeron D runs hot = based off prescott
Go with 478 Northwood 2.4, 2.6,2.8, or 3.0 C model cpu's.

I believe the Pentium M ULV's only come in BGA (Ball Grid Array) which means they're for permanent installation (they're soldered to the board).

Thats what I want.... something like a 1.2Ghz ULV Pentium M on a mini-ITX board... like the Via C3's + a 16x PCIe slot + dual channel DDR with a 90 degree riser card for PCIe videocard. SO I could build a cool as mini PC. Except I don't want to pay $300 just for the motherboard that doesn't even have the stuff on it I want!!! (like the ones currently available!)
 
Go with a Shelton! It works fine passively cooled and is OK for light server duty. You can get the motherboard with the processor sodered on for like $100 on eBay.

I've been quoted on $270 for the board, no CPU. As for the ULV Pentium M, I've had success with the Centrino Hardware Control in undervolting/underclocking my Dothan.

Sweet, I had seen the 855 Commell boards... but not the 915 one.

Too bad its still a little too pricey! But basically just what I want. I'll wait until I can order one from newegg or other online store.
 
NewEgg and comparable places are never going to have it. As it's intended for embedded use, it's not designed to be an end-user board. I'm sure you know what you're doing if you bought this, but I doubt that NewEgg is interested in this board, nor is Commell interested in volume production and end-user support.

I've got the 855GME-based LV-671, and I will most likely wait for the Merom iteration of this board, or buy a laptop if they meet my requirements.
