I was just browsing around and just recently came across this latest offering from Cooler Master and I wanted to know if anyone has seen/heard anything much about the cooler. Here's a link to Cooler Masters product page for the Ultra Vortex, and I must say.....it looks VERY promising.

For those of you that just wanna SEE the thing and don't feel like doing any reading....here ya go:

Due to the excellent design of the heatsink itself (coming in at a nice 730g withOUT the fan), and the nice airflow/noise levels out of that round 92mm fan.....I would not be surprised if this Vortex cooler surfaced as one of the top-end s939 coolers out there.

The reason I'm bringing this up is because I've been seriously considering moving to a s939 3500+/MSI K8N NEO2 setup in the next couple months.....and so naturally, i started looking for the best s939 cooler I could find. Not to my surprise, there really aren't/weren't that many of them available yet.....but even if there were.....this HSF combo from Cooler Master really looks like it has the capability to take control of the s939 air cooling market.

I'm honestly not even sure if the Ultra Vortex is available retail yet, as the only retailers I've seen with it listed don't actually have any stock.

If anyone has anything they'd like to "chime in" with here feel free.....but keep the thread crapping to a minimum. ;)

As of now I'm not really even considering another cooler for my 3500+ (which WILL be overclocked) when the time comes, but I thought it'd be worth seeing what my fellow [H]'ers had to say.

I wonder how this is in comparison to the Zalman 7000aCU or something like that

I'm assuming you're talking in regards to a s478 application then....and in that case, I still wouldnt be surprised if this Cooler Master product overthrew it. One of the Zalman's design flaws (as i see things) is the fact that the fan is INSIDE the "flower" design.....and the airflow from the fan is only making direct contact with the very bottom half of each of the fins. To start with, the Ultra Vortex's fine extend all the way to the middle of the heatsink, which is something that wasnt even possible with teh CNPS7000. having that round 92mm fan blowing 57cfm onto the TOP of all those fins is going to produce some VERY nice results.....technologically and design speaking...I'm not sure how it COULD be any worse then the Zalman for a P4, and it'd most likely be the better of the two.

Again, I can hardly wait to try it out.

I don't see the Zalman design as a flawed one. The tips of the fan blades would certainly create vortices outside of the effective fan diameter that would agitate warm air pockets between the outermost parts of the copper extrusion. The Zalman design thoroughly removes heat from all parts of the copper heatsink despite your objections to the design. If the fan was enclosed on the sides like a conventional boxed-in axial fan, you would be right to assume that it would only cool the inner sections of the heatsink, but alas, it isn't.

I dont see this as being any better than a 948 and the weight is so high you are in real danger of damaging something if its not 100% secure on the board. Add to that the non ability to change the fan to something different (by the look of it) and personally i wouldnt buy one.

Will be interesting to see how it performs though :)

I guess you're right, I was just jumping to conclusions and thinking of it like a standard case fan I guess.....that and I was dead tired last night. ;)

Well that IS why it bolts to the board you know.....and the MSI K8N NEO2 that I'm looking to pick up has a metal backplate on the mobo that the cooler bolts onto.....so I'd say it's easily going to be secure enough. Considering my buddy has the 700g Zalman CNPS7000-CU mounted to his board using the Intel retention bracket (he goes to and from LANs frequently) and he is MORE then fine....I see no reason to be alarmed about the weight of this thing.

Add to that the non ability to change the fan to something different (by the look of it) and personally i wouldnt buy one.

I can understand how some people may not like the lack up "upgradability" when it comes to the fan.....but I'm also anctious to see how the circular fan performs....and honestly, I think the "circle fan" looks pretty cool on the flower/orb shaped heatsink.....so I probly wouldn't change it anyways.

I'm still very curious to try it out, no matter what anyone else says. I do expect results similar to a 948.....but this thing looks so unique that in my eye's (even if the two coolers were neck and neck) I'd still take the Ultra Vortex for my s939 setup. I just think the circular 92mm fan would look cool mounted right in the middle of the MSI K8N NEO2. ;) :p

im a hardware whore.
this thing looks so SEXY

Good, so I'm not the only one.....

I'm actually thinking of adding a second rear fan to my Lian-Li......using the bottom one as exhaust......and then rigging up a duct from the top rear fan to intake directly onto that round 92mm fan on the Cooler Master.....to maximize the potential of that heatsink. I'm thinkin' I'd have to either rig up a 80mm-92mm adapter on the rear exhaust fan....or go ghetto and come up with something else.

ok, 939 coolers are the same coolers as 754, and 940. same retention mech. the 7000 series works on the a64 ret. mech. so you can go w. that, or anything else that works on 754/940. also, i think this is an obvios cheep knock-off of the 7000 series. i would have expected more originality from cooler-master

I wouldn't refer to it like that.....I personally think the coolermaster's heatsink itself looks nicer....but I guess I'll get to experience first hand how it performs with the fan ontop, as opposed to inside the fins. I'm not saying the CM is gonan whoop everythings ass by this huge margin....just that it does look impressive.....and I dont think you're really giving it any credit. :(

im not saying anything about the performance, but its kinda cheep how they are slightly modifying a competeters design, and then selling it as their own. now, it could work well(and probably will, as it will most likely be a less sound concious part). i just think that they could have been somewhat more origional.

also, i just want to mention again(and i think amd and the hsf manufactorers havent done a good enough job at this) that 745, 939, and 940 ARE THE SAME WHEN IT COMES TO FANS. if it fits one it fits all

1 - I realise that it was kind of unoriginal.....but the design works, and i know.....so I'm not complaining. ;)

2 - I realise that one fits all.....but this has still been one of my favorite A64 coolers I've seen to date, and probly what I'd end up going with.

i know you get it, i just try and say it as often as i can when its related to a topic. maby cut down on friviolus help posts
