this is my first build in a long time and i recently jumped on the frys msii7 combo from last week. i have a full size coolmaster case and want to oc the chip to 3.4-3.8. i dont want to push it to max and dont want my computer sounding like a windtunnel. the video card is a powercolor ati 5850 from a recent newegg deal. i was thinking of the noctua and wanted input on this and any ram recommendations. doesnt seem like there are any good deals on either ram or aftermarket cooling and i imagine the stock cpu cooler wont do. thanks for the suggestions.

Venomous X. The d14 is too big imo.

You could easily push the chip to 3.6 on stock cooling if you wanted to. The only reason to go to high end air would be for 4-4.2ghz.
Alternatively the hyper 212+ will easily get you to 3.8ghz, and probably 4ghz depending on your chip for only $27 shipped, which is almost 1/3 the cost of the noctua d14.

Save some money. Go for the COGAGE TRUE Spirit. If all you're looking for is 3.4-3.8GHz why spend $20-$40 more for the Ven-X, D14, or U12 when you can get the TRUE Spirit for $40? The new revision of the TRUE Spirit also includes the 1366 bolt through kit. The only thing you might consider is replacing the fan with a quieter one like the Gentle Typhoon 1850rpm, but if you use the PWM function, noise shouldn't be an issue. Just make sure the place you're ordering from has the new version with the 1366 bolt through kit.

I love my new Cogage TRUE Spirit. The bolt-thru kit made it feel good and sturdy. Ordered through SVC.com and recommend them.

I am not overclocked but my i7-920 at stock settings has not broken 50c yet.

can i have some recommendations on memory if i were to OC this to 3.8-4.0 ghz? im looking for 6 gigs
 
Memory is so stupid expensive right now. I bought 6 gb of 1600mhz ram for <$100 about 11 months ago. I would personally be scouring ebay for the best deal you can find on a 6GB triple channel set. Paying current retail prices for ram right now seems ridiculous.

but... maybe being that this was my first build, I was spoiled by the really good ram market at that time.
 
i agree but since i need a computer now i cant really wait for the 2 years for memory to become cheap again
