Cooler for i7 930

Hello,

I want to change the Intel stock cooler of my i7 930 CPU to something with better performance as stability and long life is something I want to achieve with this CPU. Also, noise level is critical as a lot of time my PC runs while I sleep.

My question is: which air or passive (no water cooling please) cooler would you recommend below the 65$-60$ prince range? I was thinking of buying a Prolimatech Megahalem or Armageddon but I don`t quite understand if they NEED coolers mounted on them as well. I think they would be an ideal solution because of the 0 noise level, but.. as I said before, I don`t know whether it is necessary to mount coolers on them.

I presume they will need fans attached, unless you have really good airflow and no overclock.

You could try the Thermalright HR02 which is a passive cooler. Or the cheaper version called the HR02 Macho, which comes with a quiet 140 mm fan. It should be perfect for your needs.
 
A quiet fan, below 1200 RPM is essentially silent, and cannot be heard inside a case unless the bearings are bad, is always better than no fan, usually at least 5-10 C better.
 
Thanks for the help guys. Sadly, scan.co.uk does not have any HR02's :( . Anything else you would recommend?
 
Go with a Hyper 212+/A70 with a Gentle Typhoon. The 212+ is usually around $20-30, same with the A70. Keep the stock fans, and see how it is. If you don't like it, swap them out for Gentle Typhoons, which run about $15 each. It'll be leaps and bounds better than any passive system, while keeping noise to a minimum.

I highly advise against being stuck in the "it must be passive or else" mindset. As I said before, a 1200 RPM or lower fan is essentially quiet, and you can always use your motherboard's fan control to turn the fans down/off when they're not needed.

Thanks again, I`ll try out the A70. I just need something better than the stock cooler which stays quiet. Looks like the A70 will do the job. Cheers!
 
replace the fans on the a70, Even with the resistors installed, i foudn them too loud at their low speed (1600)

Hyper 212+ is still the best bang for your buck. I've used Nexus or Scythe low speed fans with this cooler and been pleased with the silence.
