I have an fx 8320 in my main rig I have it oc'd to 4.2ghz. I could push it more if I had better cooling but i'm very conflicted about whether I should go to water or get a high end air cooler. I'm interested in the spire thermax eclipse II after reading the info on frostytech but the H80i also looks very attractive. Anyone have any thoughts?

all its reduced to Case size and ram used, high end air coolers will have conflicts with Large RAM sticks, others who are fine in that aspect have issues trying to fit huge coolers in mid size cases. so depending on that you can go with a High end air cooler or a closed loop water kit.. how much are you willing to spend?. if you have a 140mm available mount you may also want to check for a Corsair H90 as it will offer better performance than H80i at a much lower noise level. (specially if you ad some push/pull with aftermarket cooler) if you want to push the levels of the chip you may want to go with at least a high end 240mm radiator.. i have a 8350 at 5ghz with an H100i unit doing an flawless job..

H100 here and its working great. Had it on my old 8150 at 4.5 GHz and now its cooling my 8350 at 4.8 GHz and doing just fine. Youll need something with a lot of horsepower to handle a high overclocked 8000 and a HSF that will do the job like a Noctua D15 or the like is going to be huge. If youve got the room in the case and dont need the extra RAM slots, there is nothing wrong with using a HSF like that but I liked the all-in-one coolers and how they take up very little room in my case.

My case is a CM stacker 830 I've had for years now here is a link to it. Do you think there would be a way to mount an H100 or 100i onto it? I don't mind spending money on a good cooler and if it comes down to it I'll just buy a new case as well.

Sadly that case its old designed and the PSU its in top so little space to any cooler there.. you are limited to a rear 120mm Radiator and those options are very limited to coolers like Corsair H80i or if you want to spend a little more for more performance the Silverstone TD-03 offer very very high quality and cooling performance near H100 cooling.. if not then you have to go with Low profile RAM and a big Air cooler like the noctua NH-D15, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, Thermalright SilverArrow SB-E and so on a large list of huge coolers..

well i've been wanting a reason to get a new case anyways so I'll probably just get a new case with the water cooler.

then you will be fine with the best Closed loop water kit like the Swiftech H220X and Cooler master glacer 240L they are the nearest thing to a real custom water loop for sure those kits will allow to push the limits of any chip out there in the market..
