Coolbits "Optimal" Safe?

I am currently running BFG 6800GT OC in SLI on stock cooling. I recently discovered Coolbits and checked out the "Optimal Settings" and this was my result.

439/1.13

These seem a bit high from stock, anyone think this is too high to be safe?

Did you test it for artifacts in any games or benchmarks? If there are none, she's fine- probably going to be hot, but fine. Most likely it is fine. With my plain 6600, 'detect optimal' gives me 319MHz core, 540MHz mem (300/500 stock) while I run it constantly at 565MHz core and 560MHz mem without any problems- on a watercooled loop. Play some games and see how she handles it.

That's entirely plausible taht your OC is so high because the 6800GTs were essentially Ultra cores/memory sets that didn't meet that one little standard, so they were reglected to the 6800GTs instead.

My 6800GT starts to artifact eventually with my 'Optimal' detected frequency, and I am using a whopping Zalman cooler.

Try it, in some games or Aquamark/3dMark. You can't really break it. If it starts to artifact, drop it back a bit.

439 is on the high side. 1.1 memory is normally stable.

Have fun, and don't be afraid to try a few megahertz slower either. I found on my GT that a few MHz slower may actually give you a bit better score. I recommend running Aquamark 3 because it is relatively short which is good for tweaking. Normally if it is going to artifact, you will see it by the end. Also, sometimes my GT that was overclocked too high gave me visible stutters which effected the score, even though it didn't artifact. I think that was due to some kind of internal error check/correction.

Lastly, run some Doom3. Make a save game in a graphically intense location and run it while you chat on the phone or Skype. Doom3 is very stable but will artifact like a bitch on my GT if I have pushed it too far.

every driver version changes my auto detect signifcantly, but i always force it at a certain speed that has worked fine since march

Here's mine with a single 6800GS on stock cooling. Runs at 42*C.

mETRO, have u tried to overclock it more, or thats ur max?

Haven't even tried pushing it further, I might try it, but as of right now I can play any game for hours with no signs of stress and the card stays relatively cool as well. Maybe I'll do it just to see what kind of 3dMark score I can get but the card performs great in all my games so I can't complain.

Here's another.. single 6800GS. Stock cooling. Never goes above 51*C during 3dMark.

Yes it is safe. You can't burn out a card simply from overclocking it. If it is not 'safe' you will see artifacts. When you see artifacts you will know that it is time to lower the clocks closer to normal. Those clocks seem good anyway.

It's a safe area to begin. My normal 7800GTX would artifact heavily with the optimal setting and it was only 10-20 mhz quicker than default. My optimal with the card is sig is about 640/1.87 except I get little white dots occasionally popping up on the screen so I back down a bit to be safe.
