I will be putting together my WC setup shortly, and am wondering what kind of coolant I should use (distilled water is a no-brainer) but want something to make the water blue and something to keep algea and shit from growing in it. What kind of additive should I be looking for?

I was told to use either WaterWetter or....damn the name escapes me at the moment.

I use Zerex. Works well, but gives the water a pinkish tint, so might not be the best option for you.

If it's a sealed loop, you could add a little rubbing alcohol. It will probably evaporate through the tubing, but it will cleanse the system before doing so and nasty shit shouldn't be able tog et back in. For blue, you can buy dye online or procure something on your own. I have some stuff called Dye-Lite that's used for leak detection in automotive cooling systems, you can pick it up at an auto store probably. I don't know if they have blue though, you'll have to check.

I just picked some of this blue antifreeze up today from a VW dealer. This stuff is DARK straight out of the jug. I made a 90/10 mixture of distilled water and the antifreeze.

Here's the jug of blue compared to a jug of distilled water and Prestone also 90/10 mix:

Here's a shot of the water/blue coolant mixture in a glass:

I would just use streight winshield wiper fluid its blue and has alcohol in it that will improve cooling and keep system clean

I think that WWF may have some detergents or soap or something that may not be the best for some pumps. Plus I'd rather have the anticorrosive properties that the antifreeze gives. WWF may be fine, but I just 'feel' better about the distilled water/coolant mix. I think it looks hella cool too. I can't wait to get this blue stuff coursing through the 'veins' of the system.

Just an FYI, rubbing alcohol is hard on rubber O-rings and offers nothing in the way of anti-corrosive or cooling properties. Keep in mind, most water pumps use a rubber bushing on their impeller shafts. Your best bet is using some form of antifreeze. I have been using Zerex for over a year and the only sign of corrosion I have seen is some slight discoloration on copper surfaces that are in direct contact with the water. All the aluminum in my loop looked brand new as of 3 weeks ago.

BTW, that VW Blue coolant looks pretty sweet.

Also, is that UV reactive? If not, what could I put in there to make it UV reactive without buying the UV dye from online retailers?

Hilighter ink will make your water UV reactive. Just pull out the sponge part inside the hilighter and dunk it in the water until it glows the way you want. I have only used yellow though, so I don't know how well other colors will work. Also, they will eventually leave deposits in your system and the ink in the water will stain stuff.

Yeah, I doubt it's UV reactive. I was thinking about putting some red UV reactive solution in the blue and see what that would look like. I'd like to get a purple tinge out of it.
