Cool Story, bro...

Sometimes, it's the little things and a lot can be said for fixing a problem when first encountered rather than writing it off as a simple annoyance.

Just upgraded from a old XP/Athlon 64 single-core/7600GT to a newish Win7Athlon Phenom II 955/Radeon 5770 and I must say, I'm thrilled with it! However, I had one slight birthing pain that was quite entertaining, providing you were the one watching me try to figure what was going on.

After installing all my new bits into my newly dusted and cleaned up case, I push the power button and...nada. Nothing. Just a nice, loud 'CLICK-click' of me pushing the power button and releasing it. Man did my heart jump! My first reaction wasn't 'what's dead" but "what the hell did I do wrong?!" My new ASUS 785G motherboard has a nice little light that says it has power but still nothing. I did notice that the PWR LED on front of case had power (it was lit up) as did the illuminated scroll wheel on my Razer Deathadder mouse (why are they all blue? is blue the new black?) After triple-checking everything I think that maybe, somehow?, the power switch doesn't work. I disconnect the PWR Switch motherboard connector and swap it with the RESET button connector (both switches can't be failing, right?) Holy crap, it worked! Time to get out the multimeter and check continuity: reset switch beeps ok (just checking to make sure I remeber how to test for continuity; it's been a while) but the pwr switch doesn't beep. Crap. I can live with this but it was pretty annoying. I trace the green/white wire of the PWR SWTCH connector to the...what the hell? They just went to the POWER LED. The ORANGE/WHITE wires of the power switch go to...POWER LED connector.

Awesome. I just discovered, for the third time (this is my third build in this particular case) that the small black motherboard connectors of the PWR switch/led were swapped/mislabeled (one says PWR SW, the other says PWR LED and just in case you're not too clear what the hell I'm talking about, these are the tiny, 2-pin wide connectors that attach to the mother board.) I now recall having this issue, with the same 'no power' after connecting everything, on the last build almost four years ago (too long ago to remember the first build, but I'm certain it was the same too.) I also remember just swapping the connectors to the correct pins, because I was lazy like that.

So now that I realized what happened and more importantly why (see first sentence of post), I go ahead and swap the connectors to the correct wires. Now the power switch is connected properly and all works as intended and, again, I'm terribly impressed with how everything is working.

I still need to finish added various bits of software and setting things up how I want them but everything is looking good so far. Next will to try some limited OC, at least to Phenom II 965 levels.

Wow. Cool story, bro. :p

Seriously, though, did you check the wiring in the case header (behind the power button) to see whether or not the PWR SW and PWR LED cables were "switched" as well? That's the first time I've ever heard of something like that causing problems, to say the least.

heart always stops at that point in a build :)

now...

@tiraides: yeah, I checked the wiring, which is how I figured out the connector was wrongly labeled. I just used a tack to pop the metal bits out of the plastic connector, then inserted them into the correctly labeled ones (power switch is now PWR SW and power led is now PWR LED).

@kirbyrj: it's actually a nice case. It's sleek, all black aluminum and 6 80mm fans. And NOW, with no-longer-mislabeled header connectors.

What case is it?

Elefino...some cheap* Lian Li knockoff from many years back. 4x5.25 bays, 4x3.5 bays (1 internal, behind the blank spot below the 3 visible ones), removable MB tray, 6 case fans, nice little upfront connectors for usb, sound, headphones. I seriously need to replace all the fans as 2 of them are definitely bad and I figure the rest aren't far behind, plus I want to redo the wiring.

*and by cheap, I mean much better than most cases I came across at the time, but it was about half the price of an actual Lian Li case. It's similar in layout to a Lian Li PC-60

Can it support 120mm case fans? If it can, get some Yate Loons from Jab-Tech.

I had a very similar case...lol. I hated the fact that the front screws would come loose because the threads weren't long enough :). Looks like you changed them.

Not really. The openings are only big enough for 80mm. I was planning on ordering a handful of same type of fan from newegg tomorrow. they're just a couple of bucks and I read of a trick to add in-line resistor to adjust voltage to fan, and thus fan speed. Er...just now remembered I also wanted to look into one of those front panel add-ins for adjustable fan control. Could go either way at this point.

Nope, case came as is.The big brass-colored screws match the Power and Reset buttons and usb/sound inputs at bottom and came that way. I think I got it from CompUSA sometime around 2003. It has served it's purpose well, that is until the recently annoying fan issues. I haven't wanted to replace it but after walking through Fry's last week I had brief thoughts of doing so. I've already spent a little more on this upgrade than I intended. I still need another SATA drive to replace my data disk since it's IDE. This new mb only had one IDE that's being used by lightscribe/dvd burner. Plus the replacement fans. I'll save any case upgrade for next year or something. :)
