Currently for my main storage I'm using:
HP P812 Smart Array (in a DL380 G6)
HP MSA 60 enclosure - 12 X 2TB SATA
HP MSA 60 enclosure - 12 X 146GB 15k SAS
HP MSA 70 enclosure - 25 X misc SAS 2.5" drives
My OS is windows, and I'm planning on changing it up. I'm tired of the noise these MSA's make, and the smart array card really limits my options in terms of ZFS (can't do it).
Performance is decent, but the MSA's also limit SATA to 1.5gbps, and barely works with consumer SSD.
My goal here is to find something rackmountable that I can replace the MSA's with. Obviously keeping things cheap. My thoughts are I will have to ditch the P812 controller no matter what. Do any of you build standalone storage enclosures? I'm assuming it's not too terribly difficult, just a case, a PSU, and some sort of on/off device? I know I'll need an externally facing controller for my server to connect to this external tray of drives, plus something on the other end to accept the connection?
I'd love to hear thoughts on how to best make this switchover. I've browsed through the show-off thread, but most of it isn't quite what I'm looking for.
