I am such a noob.
Converter failed at 1% sixteen times, each after making one change and checking logs around the point of failure, Googling, learning and trying something new.
...nothing would allow an upload of more than a few kilobytes, alternately erroring with encountered I/O error and encountered a network error. Wireshark & PerfMon, nbtstat, netstat, WinSCP, SSH...nothing was cluing me in to what the problem was.
(I was almost sure it was having single-disks on the mobo sata controller - old small SATA-1 disks on SATA-II ports)
PUNCH-LINE HERE==>>> I had set my NIC to 100/Full (esxi server was 1000 full)
...some time ago I changed it, to speed up a transfer to an older NIC, or insure home group availability, I don't remember. And, I only looked because I was try slowing down both ends (dumb idea to slow disk I/O) - anyway, I saw it and setting it to 1000 Full solved my Converter/WinSCP/Datastore Browser problems!
so, I hope somebody finds that as funny as I did. Man, I spend way too much time trying to put together parts that belong in the trash, just for being broke - like three days shrinking my c:\ partition to pull the (160 GB sata-1) drive for the ESXi box.
Reminds me of the first time I installed Windows NT Server and removed System from the file permissions on the boot drive. hahahaha
EDIT: IF I HAD ONLY $100 TO IMPROVE ON MY SYSTEM, WHERE SHOULD IT GO?
EXISTING EQUIP:
INTEL S1200BTS mATX C203 entry server board, only one LAN port in ESXi
16 GB (2x8GB) UDIMM ($164 for another 16)
E3-1230 (Intel 3.2 quad-core, 8 threads, 80W, stock cooler)
160 GB SATA-1 hdd
250 GB SATA-1 hdd
500 GB SATA-1 hdd
obvious options:
(1) used drives to mirror mine + used NIC
(2) 120GB SSD
(3) three used SATA-II drives and possibly a small SSD for swap files of 3 VM's (and later add a RAID-1E capable controller?)
I also have a Pentium-D, 3.4 Ghz, Intel Desktop board, 2 GB, IDE drives (60+200), which should evolve into solaris ZFS server, right? with 2GB FC HBA's, (after I can afford to build a duplicate host).

Convert without SSL across a 5-port gigabit switch and ratty cat-5 patches, finished thick conversion of an 80 GB 2008 SharePoint server in 23 minutes, (finally isht's working the way it's supposed to), and now I'm in front of a server that seems very quick...I know I should be using build scripts but i'm impatient to configure my domain and AD, and get things to a point where I can install service applications for sharepoint.
