Anyone tried this yet? Im thinking something like one of those old mac cubes. Custom made cube case with a 120mm in the bottom, vented at the top. Will this be enough to keep a newer system cool?
 
The answer to your question depends mostly on the type of components you're using. If we're talking about a P4 Prescott (D), then pure convection wouldn't work, unless you were to use heatpipes and enormous heatsinks (see Zalman's offerings, for example).

Remember that the Mac Cube was akin to a P2/low-clocked P3 in terms of heat output, and it still overheated.

You mentioned using a fan, so I assume you're not going for a 100% passive solution (like the Mac Cube)?
 
Thanks for the replies. Yes, Im thinking of using 1 or 2 120mm fans mounted in the bottom. The whole top vented. Most likely Ill go with an amd midrange processor with a x800xl. I would like to make a custom wood cube built around 2 cheap metal case frames. So I guess no not really convection but looking to get low powered fans to replace everything.

In my opinion the best aircooling solution is used for the PowerMac G5, with thermal zones ('ducts') and a lot of thermally controlled fans. It's quite silent, even with a power-hungry beast (beasts) of a CPU.

If you decide you want to use a less forcefully forced convection configuration, then I'd advice you spend some time working out the thermo- and aerodynamic aspects of it, as it's not as easy as it may look at first. Alternatively you can build multiple test configurations, and test the airflow and temperatures..
