Controllers for emulators.

i absolutely love the gamecube controller but its lack of clickable joysticks and a second left shoulder button make Pro Evolution Soccer feel a little wierd.

otherwise i just use a PS2 controller with my magic joy box

A little off topic but have any of you guys got any games like mario cart or 007 on an emulator with 4 players working? Is it possible to have 4 xbox controllers? I already have 2

ugh, the old d-pad...
would not buy those myself, but i guess you're ok with them. I'm assuming price is an issue?
you'd have MUCH better luck with these, but they are more expensive than those:

You said you were expecting heavy D-pad usage but went with controllers that have one of the worst D-pads ever? LeviathanZERO linked to the improved ones above, but they still leave much to be desired.

I count 9 or so people in this thread mentioning/recommending the 360 controller. I said originally that price was a bit of an issue but no one seems to have liked the 3rd party options I listed.

I even brought up myself that I had heard a lot of criticism about the 360 dpad. I did some reading on other websites too and regarding the new "transforming" dpad, a lot people said it was a very small improvement for $30+ more total (would have needed to buy receiver, doesn't come with one unlike what I linked). You don't sound very convinced it is worth the upgrade either CEpeep.

The wired retro controllers sounded neat but then I started thinking about the fact that I'm using multiple emulators, multiple platforms, too many different needs buttons wise. Even if cost isn't as much of an issue, the clutter of multiple pairs of controllers and adapters didn't sound too fun.

One of my favorite gamepads for the PC has been the Hammerhead FX, which I don't believe they make any more. It's not the best d-pad ever but it's good (better than gamecube, ps-x, or xbox) and the analog sticks are good. It also has a billion buttons so it's easy to configure for any system.

There are USB and gameport versions, only the USB-only version supports rumble without battery.

Wasn't trying to sound condescending, was just surprised at your choice. Maybe you'll have a fine time with them, or maybe you'll just get used to using the analog stick instead of the d-pad. My favorite controller for playing retro (pre-PS1) games right now is actually a Wii remote in sideways configuration (it uses Bluetooth for wireless) but it has a limited number of buttons. The d-pad is the best I've used since the SNES though. I have a couple of 360 controllers too, but I always find myself using the stick instead of the pad for platformers and such.

Yeah. Me too. I've got a handful of controllers in the house - SNES, Saturn, NES, PS3/Xbox360/Wii and I had lots of hands on time with the Dreamcast, n64, and other consoles. For a while I had 8-10 consoles hooked up all at once.

Honestly, the 360 has the worst dpad of any console I've ever used. It is just terrible. I can't even rely on it for weapon switching in Gears for a simple 1-direction press.

I'd rather play a game on the n64 dpad or the gamecube d-pad than the 360 dpad.

The only dpad I've had more terrible have been on third party controllers that screw with it - like that use a circle for a dpad or the like.

Everyone always says "Oh, just use an Xbox controller, they're already USB."

But to me, the 360 controller just doesn't cut it. It may have good buttons and tight analogs, but it has the worst Dpad in the history of Dpads, period. The only time a 360 controller is good is when it's some aftermarket like Nyko or Madcatz, when they swap out that rocker switch for a legit cross Dpad. With the 360, it's way too easy to accidentally hit diagonals. I had a 2 port PSX/PS2 controller adapter for a while, and that was good, but even Sony's Dpad with its separated diamonds hurts to use after a while. Nintendo has had the best Dpad since the original NES, SNES and N64. I wouldn't want to use anything less for classic game emulation. Once I got the Mayflash wireless Classic Controller to USB adapter and got to use the old flatty on my emulators, that was it. I never looked back.

This isn't meant to be "spam." This isn't meant to be a "thread necro."
I'm just letting people know this thing is out there. Mayflash makes some
awesome stuff. HOPEFULLY this gets left up so others can know it exists.

But for those who, for whatever reason, dislike the Classic Controller.
Mayflash is also planning to put these out soon...

You have a choice of using the Wii U Pro or Sony Dual Shock 3,
and each of these adapters can support up to four controllers.

No BT dongle, no MotioninJoy, Glovepie or Bluesoleil required.
Just straight DirectInput (and Xinput) conversion.
(Not that you couldn't get Xinput with x360ce.exe)

I like my Saitek P2600; would be perfect if the thumbsticks could actually click in...We need more 6-button controllers!

I recently bought this and it seems very solid.

I think I got mine from Yamato through Amazon.com but their price on it has skyrocketed to 1000$ :D

Racketboy makes a Saturn-> USB adapter. Probably cheaper than trying to get one of the legit USB pads on ebay.

True, standard saturn pads are much cheaper, but still $20+ on ebay.

Wow. Didn't realize they'd gotten that high. I'll have to keep an eye out for them locally. I've got 3 or 4 and a joystick laying around.

Still, I always prefer the adapter approach - lets you swap controllers if something wears out, lets you use a joystick too, etc.
