I got 1 160gb ide spinpoint and 1 old baracuda iv 60gb (supersilent).. 1 dvd... problem is i only got 1 idesocket (can only have 2 ide) on motherboard..(and 896 sata sockets >| )

Should i chuck my seagate and by a expensive sata?.. or by a cheap controller card?

or...Do controller cards eat cputime?are they bad for transfers?

If you are dead set on keeping these IDE drives, then I could invest the $5-$10 to get a cheap PCI-IDE adapter off Fleabay.
Another alternative -although more expensive- would be an IDE-to-SATA converter, which can be had around $10 each on Fleabay. If you are buying these, I would try to look for ones with a Silicon Image chipset. I have had good results with them. I remember to have heard rumors that other converters may be flaky.

you can make them into externals with a couple 3.5 inch enclosures
10-15 bucks at the egg.

I have a couple that look just like the one in the first link and never had a problem with them.
