Well anyone have some ideas?

Anyone willing to help with the prize?

Lets hear it. :D

I think a good PSU 450-750W high efficiency PSU would make a great giveaway or possibly an H50 CPU cooler. Any rig needs a PSU regardless of which client it runs. I could help a bit with the prize.

I'll think about some contest ideas. I still think screenshots of a palindrome on WU or point totals would be cool but that's just me.

I have a couple of DDR sticks lying around. Uh, I might have a mobo lying around......

Heck, I think I even have a 760 Optiplex that just needs a processor and memory / video card, barebones system I guess you could say.

Is the optiplex full tower? Hmmmmm

It is a full tower, well, mid tower actually.

How would it be decided who gets the prize?

We will form a committee. That committee will be responsible for forming a panel.
The panel will nominate user to be in a survey.
The survey will determine how many criteria should be used in selection.
Once the number of criteria has been selected, a council will be formed to study how many users meet the criteria the survey includes. ....................

That's what I was about to say.

How is the prize going to get to the winner? Who pays for shipping? What if the winner doesn't live in the US? And what brought this giveaway thing on?

Bro you know I got stuff to cover this!
I have anything you need!
I'll throw in a K9A2 Platinum board, Sempron and gig of ram if we can come up with a creative idea!!
Maybe a monthly prize with a year end prize or something?? Just thinking outloud!!

Almost forgot.....Vote EA 2/10 :D:D:D:D:D

Well.... sounds like we have the basics.... now we just need a GPU.

Anyone have a GPU that they want to donate or sell to me at a good price to get a rig together?

Well last time it went a bit like this :D

Round 1
Round 2
Round 3

We just need to think up something fun that will get as many people involved as possible.

I total agree with this! I'm thinking at least a couple weeks of front page coverage to get a lot of people interested.
I'm not a fan of 4 or 5 people completing over a full folding rig.
10 to 20 or more on the other hand.....:cool:
And I'm thinking of a four GPU setup!! Maybe 4 GSO's or something.
Start a Paypal account for a GPU fund, again just thinking outloud.

A quad GPU rig...... me likes the way you think.

Now where will we find 4 matching GSOs?

Also, like you had before, different rounds but make them worth a % of total score.
Add in total points in a time frame worth 15% to 20% of total score or something.

Now where will we find 4 matching GSOs?

Just 4 matching cards.
I have 3 GSO's. 1 is a little glitchy. 1 the fan is about to lock up. 1 works like a champ.

1 of my cards is this one. It has the bad fan. These pull 3,200+ppd o/c'ed.

The other two are these. One runs great and the other is glitchy. These pull 3,700+ppd o/c'ed.

If you want to do another giveaway, I'd be happy to help out with a contest again. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to donate any hardware at the moment, but I'll do what I can.

As for the prize, I personally am not a big fan of the quad-GPU rig idea. I think it would be better to have multiple smaller prizes spread out between multiple winners, for a number of reasons:
-More incentive for people to participate since they have a better chance of winning something.
-A single-GPU rig is much easier to maintain and run than a multi-GPU rig, from both a troubleshooting and a power consumption/cost standpoint.
-In case a winner decides to stop folding at some point with the hardware he or she won, at least some of the hardware will still be contributing.
I'll think about some contest ideas. I still think screenshots of a palindrome on WU or point totals would be cool but that's just me.

I like the multiple prize idea. I'd open it to all new folders effective a certain date and then if they contribute at least 100K points in say 2 or 3 months they have a chance in the drawing. Or graduate the point requirement and offer a chance at a better prize for more points over that time.

Say 20k over 2 months -- chance at a stick of ram
40k chance for 1 of 3 8800gts
100k chance for 1 of 4 core2 cpus

Of course all of this depends on prize donations.

I like the set up a general fund idea, but we'd have to explain to the masses why we choose X person, I know we all trust him but for others too..

Anyways, I'm not sure about a full rig but howabout a bunch of video cards and a few other things, then we can level out multiple places or winnings so as many people get something as possible
if we can mass up funds for a few cards and maybe get some donated ram, heatsinks, lower CPUs, etc

he'll, maybe have a grab bag and all the runners up can pick from that, little things to fill out rigs

just throwing out ideas, counting on y'all to make them good ones

I like the funds idea, someone would have to buy the components though. I also like the idea about individual gift over a whole system too.

Good ideas so far and I for 1 would be willing to contribute some funds towards this once things are decided.

So, what about those of us who live across the pond from the US? :)

You think Tigerbiten and I aren't the only EUians? :D

No, but someone has to coordinate a contest over there.... might as well be you. For one of us to try and figure out how to get folding hardware over there with shipping, customs and the like..... It's much easier if either part of the contest or a different contest is held over there.

I guess so :)

I'll keep an eye on this contest topic and see what it does. Get some inspiration and such :)

Would some OLD 24 port switches&hubs be of any use? Its old lan party gear I used around 99 and now just collecting dust.

if they are 10/100 port hubs they would work great.. save people from having to run multiple routers for larger farms.. but 24 port might be a tad overkill..

1 10/100 switch. (super cheap TrendNet)
1 10mb cisco 1900 (have to remember where I put it)
1 10mb hub with 100mb AUI adapter (this one I was keeping for the old school feel, but getting less and less nolstalgic) FYI this one is huge! its twice as deep as the cisco.
