Hey there, I am currently considering upgrading my pc. I recently upgraded from my 20" LCD to my 37" 1080p and it has become apparent that the system is struggling quite a bit more than it was at 1680x1050.

What do you think is the weakest link in my system? My first guess was Videocard, but I'm not sure.

Games I run are: COD4, Fallout3, WoW, Left 4 Dead etc, etc.

WoW Is a big one I notice the framerate lower than id like. Seeing quite a few in the 30's at 1080p with 16x AF on, and only 2x AA. Id really like to be able to raise the low end and get AA to atleast 4X. I am also noticing both cores sitting about 60% in WoW. Not sure if its dual aware so that might mean 100% cpu usage.


COD4 struggles once i bump to 4x AA as well.

Forgot to add: I generally have Vsync and Tripple buffering active as well in every game.

Whats your thoughts?

The 8800 GT is in my opinion.

You could up it to a GTX 260 or 4870.
 
I agree with xBanzai89 is saying the 8800gt is the sweet spot. It's very affordable and is still very good for the games you mentioned above.

yes, you need to upgrade your video card. your system is still fine. I would recommend a 4870 1gb or a GTX260 192 core. either would be a better fit to a 2mp screen. not sure what your 20" resolution was but I am betting that your have to push a lot more pixels and that fall squarely on the graphics card.

1680x1050 to 1920x1080.

ATI is out of the question, so that leaves the 260. Isn't the 216 core better as it has more SP? or am i missing something

not really it benchmarks better but go look at the H reviews for the last couple of games, the 192 core does just as well as the 216, it just cost less. look at what mark had to say about it.
Woes of the 216 Core GTX 260

The only problem we have with the new GeForce GTX 260 is this: it has no right to be more expensive than the original GTX 260, and yet it is. It is no faster than the original, regardless of how many more shaders or texture units it has, and yet it consistently costs more. It is hard for us to see the "revised" GeForce GTX 260 as anything but an excuse for NVIDIA to raise prices back up to where perhaps they should have been competition notwithstanding. NVIDIA maniacally cut prices in the face of stiff competition from AMD, and perhaps cut a little too deep. It is convenient, then, that this supposedly updated GeForce GTX 260 GPU comes out at a higher price tag.

Remember that it was initially supposed to supplement the original GTX 260, not supplant it. All that has changed now, and the "old" GTX 260 is going away. While we can understand that NVIDIA and its partners need to make money as much as any other business, we very much feel like this has been a case of bait-and-switch, and while we're expected to spend more money on this "new" GTX 260, we aren't really getting anything more out of it according to every game we have tested so far. Thankfully, prices on the “new” GTX 260 are starting to drop this holiday season, and we hope to see that continue.


that seems to hold true across the board. If your going to spend more money on GTX260 then get an overclocked version, you will actually get something for your money. with the old GTX260 and the 4870 512mb (1gb has been seen for 220) both available for under 200 there isn't a lot of reason to spend more for better benchmarks.
