I remember in the good old days, this used to be possible with Hitachi and Samsung drives. Now that these two companies have been acquired, are there still consumer drives (e.g. lower priced drives) which can operate in a server 24/7 hardware raid environment?

Specifically, the drives would need to have TLER or equivalent.

So I'm a bit hesitant to jump on the red drives, if you look at newegg reviews, that drive has absolutely been shat on.

The results got a little skewed early on as the first batches had some issues IIRC, but they've since stabilized greatly. Plus with Newegg if you read half the idiotic reviews on just about anything they are completely irrelevant to the actual product.

If you want to get serious about RAID drives than the Western Digital RE drives are incredible, yet pricey alternatives.

Seagate also has its own NAS offering, running a couple myself with no trouble so far.

He will be referring to the STx000VN000 drives.

Not sharpest price and being a 5900RPM Vs the 7200 of the DM drives.

Newegg reviews are essentially meaningless, a customer who comes back to the site for an RMA request is motivated to leave negative feedback while they're there. Even the best hard drives are going to have higher return rates than most other products. The only people who have real, meaningful data on drive reliability are the manufacturers and customers with huge numbers of drives.

The Reds have the features you want, I'd go with them.

Yup, those are the ones. Rotational speed for the Seagate still a slight bit above the WD Red's at 5400rpm.

Hitachi drives work fine in any configuration, at least the just over 30 i have in raid arrays do.
