This is really pissing me off. I keep getting lockups in COD ,COD2, Fear, etc. I have tried to reformat my HD, reinstalled XP Pro, got the latest drivers for video, MB, Audio, BIOS, Directx, etc. I even tried installed out nvidia drivers.

Still this system crashes over and over.

My specs are as follows:

Athlon 64 3800
2 GB PC3200 Dual Channel RAM (PQI)
Gigabyte Socket 939 SLI MB
BFG 6800 GT OC 256 PCI-Express
PC Power and Cooling SLI ready 510W Power Supply

Is it time to start swapping hardware? I figure I can try and swap the MB, PS and Video card. I don't think this problem is driver related.

Any thoughts?

What kind of temps are you getting for your GPU, CPU and ambient case temperature? There's also a chance it could be your PSU, which is what I would try to swap out first. If that doesn't work, it should be noted that frequent lock-ups in games is also a sign of imminent hard drive failure...

I figured it out. I bought a new PS, MB and Video Card and swapped them one at a time. The new PS still caused lockups. The new video card (7800 GT) did not.

Time to RMA the BFG 6800 GT OC.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

So you went out and bought all those parts just to troubleshoot it lol?

hope not.

did he say the card was BFG? lol.
I suspect it is overheating.

Uh oh. RMAing a BFG is a royal pain-in-the-butt from what I've heard. I wish you good luck in your endeavors.

I don't think it was overheating because the game would crash first thing in the morning after starting cold. And yes, I bought those parts. I will also be returning them as well. The MB wasn't opened and the other 2 were used for 10 minutes.

I saved myself a lot of grief by doing this instead of the endless setting adjustments that wouldn't have worked anyways.

Sometimes the fastest and easiest way to figure it out is to swap hardware.

It worked this time.

Well, it took 40 minutes on the phone but BFG came through. No problem on the RMA. Sent the card off yesterday. They said the new card should arrive in 2 weeks.

No hassles.

isn't it kind of inefficient to do things this way?

to buy products, have them shipped, test them out, ship the ones that wern't the problem back...
