I currently have:

E6600 OC'd to 3.3 ghz
EVGA 680i
2x 8800GT 512 MB SLI
4gb OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066

I am considering upgrading this system after several years, and I am looking at the new GTX 460s for a relatively cheap way to do it. I am a little concerned, though, that given the 8800GT SLI was such a powerful combo when I bought it, any performance increase will be either

a) insignificant
and/or
b) severely CPU bottlenecked.

I gotta say, this system has really lasted the way it is.. but I am starting to yearn for a little more raw horsepower. And yes, I play high-end games with this rig.

So what should I upgrade first? Begin!
 
If it lasted you this long, then I suggest you wait a little longer. Save up your money for a few months and upgrade your whole system.

What resolution do you game it?
 
I game at higher resolutions, usually 1920x1200 if I can muster it. That's where the SLi combo has really been key.

I guess the other question would be: is my system old enough to warrant an upgrade? I know that question is somewhat subjective, but your thoughts are appreciated.
 
It depends on the games you play, really.

One thing to do to know which component to replace is by playing your games at the lowest resolution and comparing the FPS to the highest resolution FPS.
 
Do you mean the 8800gt's?

I guess I would say that is really the point: I'm not sure where the bottleneck is right now. Both the cpu and vid cards seem pretty comparable in terms of age and performance, but my intuition is that the vid cards are holding me back. Some newer games have resulted in much higher strain on the cards.
 
That would be my guess as well. Especially with the healthy OC you have the e6600's, I think you should be fine.

My suggestion would be to wait till the Radeon 6xxx series launches later this year, and grab a 5850/5850 when the price drops. Those should get you single-card performance at about the cost of a SLI setup, unless you're dead set on a SLI setup.
