Considering replacing Plasma TV with Projector

So right now I'm considering a projector and kind of want some basic info (any subjective good/bad questions are with respect to a plasma or LCD TV):
- How good are the contrast ratios in a dim-but-reasonably lit room?
- How good is the picture quality?
- Do they burn in at all?
- Are transition times (and other gaming factors) decent?
- What are a few good budget models current? I don't need 3D or WIFI or anything like that. I just want to be able to feed it both PC and gaming console signals. Cheap and good as it gets. I don't actually have any real budget for this, but the more cost effective the better as I'm still bitterly swallowing the money I wasted on my plasma TV.


I'm considering projectors because I've read that modern ones are pretty good. The only other thing I'm worried about is that I have to shove it on the ceiling and I don't know how to get my cords over there.... but that's another question no one can really help me with.



I'm getting really tired of having to dance around with my plasma for PC/video use in order to not have the image burn in... and then failing anyway. I don't know if my 800$ plasma is defective or not, but after playing Divinity Original Sin (messed up my back so I wanted to use the recliner and couldn't use my Swift with comp chair) for only a few hours yesterday, some of the GUI elements have apparently already burned in. I think I have some elements from when the TV was doing its own setup about a year ago burned in as well, along with other random things. I've heard Samsung doesn't accept RMA's on plasmas due to burn ins, and I am not sure if I want to mess with it instead of just putting it in my room instead of the living room and then just getting something else. Somewhat pissed but what can I do.


Any other advice is also welcome, thanks. This is strictly living room, large TV and far distance use. My gaming monitor will probably be an RoG Swift for a long time. I just want a display I don't have to worry about all the time =_=;.
 
While you're waiting I strongly recommend going over to the AVS Forums and going into their projector forums and doing some lurking at minimum. :)
 
So this is an AVSForums question? Fair enough, I have an account on there. Now that I think about it, I think they have a FAQ or something for this...
 
I just want to note... after asking everyone at the avsforums place about what projector I should get, I went with a Benq w1070 (this happened weeks ago, but worth noting now I suppose). It's a great purchase for the price. I don't even have a screen, I just have it going at the wall. Excellent colors and 150 inch image. It's been one of the few display decisions I didn't really regret at all. Especially that 150+ inch image. Geez... try getting that from an LCD, I dare you. I really love this thing. Excellent for watching movies or playing console games (or playing PC games with my 360 controller, if I ever care to considering I have an RoG Swift as my PC monitor...).

Would suggest anyone considering going for a large TV to try it out. Even at like 90 inches or so, it's really so awesome.


The plasma TV just went in my bedroom. Not sure whether I should try Samsung RMA or not considering I don't have the box...
 
Is the image retention permanent on your plasma? I have had some stuff burn in pretty good but running the grey slider and a burn in disc for awhile always fixes it for me. Even then I rarely have to do that as watching movies is usually enough to clear off the burn in.
 
I believe it is permanent (it didn't come out with a few hours of running the grey-white thing or anything), but I'm not 100% sure. I use the projector for almost everything now, and only occasionally use the plasma TV (because I have my Surface Pro for watching things in the bedroom anyway, and the plasma TV has nothing but an optical out =_=; ). Good, large image and I don't have to worry about burn in at all.

My only regret is that I didn't get a projector to begin with. The plasma does have pretty nice blacks though, and I do use it for occasional bedroom watching. What sucks is the remote this Samsung comes with. It's got the Crunchyroll app, but I can't even control it because I don't think it understands how this piece of crap's inputs work.

I've had a Benq W5000 DLP projector for over 5 years and it's my favorite display purchase ever. I'm on my second bulb. Picture quality is stellar on my 116 inch screen. I actually purchased an 800$ Elunevision screen and returned it after discovering that my custom paint mix from AVS forum did a better job. The DIY screen section is a wealth of great information and kind people, one the best forums on the net. Burn in is not possible on a projector. The only problem with my projector is that it has high input lag but the newer Benq W1070 doesn't have that problem. Once you go projector you never go back.

Art at Projectorreviews may be the best reviewer I've ever read. The guy is pretty much god when it comes to projector knowledge.

I love it, I'm pretty picky when it comes to TV, and my main TV upstairs is a Panasonic G15 , however, what do you consider reasonably lit? it will impact your contrast ratio for sure, but this projector is bright enough to be used with some lighting ( more so for computer use, less so on dark scenes).

I also game on it, Battlefield 3 /4, Witcher 2, WoT etc are some of the games I've played, it seems pretty fast to be, but I've never been too picky about pixel response times, I still prefer a 6-8ms IPS over 1-2ms TN.
 
I already have one of those as I have said, Pastuch. It really is a great projector, too. Proof that good things don't have to cost an arm and a leg. They just have to be engineered intelligently.

From what I've read, DLP appears to be better than most consumer technologies in terms of motion clarity. I mean I noticed immediately and wondered if it was just me... so I read up on it. When I was rotating the camera in Disgaea D2 for instance, there was pretty much no blurring aside from the fact the camera was moving. So it's also an excellent technology for gaming (especially split screen with friends, if you consider that each little split screen is larger than my entire plasma TV...). No one had to squint to see anything that night...

The downside is that I can see the rainbow effect to a limited extent (and so can a friend) but luckily as the projector warms up the effect is far diminished. I have to look for it. I also wonder if this is as rare a condition as they make it seem. Because a friend of mine could see it too, while another didn't know what we were talking about...

Maybe one of these days I'll get one of the Sony projectors instead. Heard they're better for that... At like 3 times the price though.
 
I really hope we see a DLP 4k projector from Benq soon but I haven't heard anything. I definitely want a 4k projector with low input lag. I agree that DLP is better than LCD for gaming motion. Despite being LCD based, Epson has a stellar reputation for support and display quality but their Faux-K isn't quite what I want. I've never seen RBE so I guess I'm lucky.
 
Yeah I played videogames on a 2008 Samsung led projector for about three years I even played Demon Souls on it couldn't see what the hell I was doing in some parts of the game. I just projected on a piece of paper I looked at screens but many o them were just too big even looked at Paint. Sold the projector about two years ago. Projectors are pretty cool if you get a decent one with a bulb that won't burn out.

I'm the opposite. I can't stand projectors and am extremely disappointed plasma's are no longer being made.

I would try a break in disc on your plasma. I find the scrolling greyscale to be fairly ineffective at reducing burn in.

Yep, there are some great value pjs.
I cant speak for the Benq, I wish I had a chance to see one set up well.
My Optoma HD131x has a long bulb life of 6000/3500 eco/full power.
And the UK bulb price is around £110 only!
Decent image quality and as a bonus the 3D is very good.
Response time is near as dammit immediate and its very quiet for a pj.

I'm halfway through the bulb and the image is still very bright.
Full power is 240W max, this drops on darker scenese with dynamic black enabled, which I never turn off because its great.
I can easily use it for Windows and casual TV with the room light on. This obviously isnt advised for highest quality viewing.

If you can control your room light for watching movies and gaming, pjs are a very good option these days, even on a budget.
My pj needs around 4m throw distance and should ideally be mounted at the height of the top or bottom of the screen.
There are other pjs if this isnt suitable.
 
I have the w1070 and I really enjoy it. Only downside for me is I like to turn on tv and work on stuff at the same time so I need the lights on and it makes the projector useless, so I have both a projector and tv that is behind the screen for when I want to watch with the lights on.
