Hi All,

I don't see a 'normal' case thread, so I guess this is the place for this.

I currently have an Asus A8V, A64-3500 (Boxed) GeForce 6800GT, two Seagate 160GB SATA's and 2GB Crucial Memory in an Antec Sonata (Rev 1) case.

It has the second optional 120mm cage fan installed.

I'm not convinced this case moves enough air, especially considering the failure I recently had with the Crucial 2GB Memory.

CPU Temps run around 52c with normal desktop usage. I have no doubt it goes up during gaming.

Some things I like and want to keep if I get a new case:

1. The side-insert rail system for the drives.
2. The rail-mounting system for CD Drives.
3. Three 5.25 bays minimum.
4. Four 3.5 internal bays minimum.
5. The neat 5.25 bays that hide the CD Drives would be nice. I HATE DOORS! The door on this Sonata is always in the damned way.

I like aluminum cases much better than this hunk-o-steel Sonata. I have a Lian-Li PC70 case that has 8 drives in it and it cools just fine.

What is the cutting edge case these days? It's been a while since I bought one.

Lian Li PC-60BPlus Black Computer Case

I'm a bit traditional :) I hate Windows, I hate doors that cover the front of the computer, and I HATE wonky designs :)

I also ordered a couple of the Lian-Li CD-ROM "Flippy Door Things". Those are cool. Got the last two I believe (it shrunk my order from 3 to 2, saying only 2 were available).

Also 5 packs of 10 thumbscrews (not for the case, for HD's). Dirt cheap.

And finally since I was placing an order, four 10ft USB2 cables, one 16ft USB cable, one 6ft USB cable. My god, compared to Best Buy they were a steal!

The same cable that costs $39 at Best Buy is $11.99 at NewEgg.

I used to work in computer retail (small private store) and I know these cables cost resellers about $3 a pop, but jeez. BestBuy is outta their friggin' minds!

Working in the corporate scene has brought a much more handsome salary, but let me tell you. I MISS the days of ordering at cost from places like IE, Ingram Micro, etc... :)

Yeah, I think so. It's just enough of everything.

I have a PC70 I got when they first came out (and were REAL expensive) that my server resides in. It's had as many as 12 hard drives in it and it never broke a sweat :)

It's only got 8 now (6 for the Raid-5), a boot drive, and the CD.

The only thing I don't care for (and never understood) is the upside-down mounting of the Power Supply. I live with it :)

That huge server case, with all it's drives, is _lighter_ than my current desktop Antec Sonata by a long shot!

Lian-Li craftmanship always keeps me coming back to them.

I also have a small PC-50 which is not in use right now, but even that $100 case is a marvel of workmanship. I just don't think it moves enough air in stock for for today's Video Cards and Processors, not that it was desinged to.

I think I'll use it for a HTPC with a low-end Duron (or whatever the current low-end AMD is) and mod the hell out of it :)

If there is a weak point on Lian-Li's, if this is still an issue, is the Fans. They never seem to last more than 6 months. I always replace them with CoolerMasters. CoolerMaster has some damned fine 80mm BB fans that are extremely quite. They are so good they are the only one's the local computer shop carries. I'm sure they have 120mm versions too, and I'll pick up a few.

damn the sonata is a nice and perfect case besides its lacked cooling and weight....i love its simplicity :p
 
Ok, everything transplanted and assembled. The Lian-Li CD Covers worked perfectly.

No issues during assembly.

Well, there was one, caused by my own stupidity.

I've built 25-30 machines for myself over the last 20 years, and I've never had an initial-powerup fail. Until last night.

I turned it on, and I swear I thought I had stepped on the cat. There was this horrific squeal coming from somewhere.

After an hour disconnecting this, testing, disconnecting that, testing, etc... I finally realized what it was.

The 6800GT. Molex Connector. Was, um, empty :)

Plugged in a power tap and all was well.

I still don't know exactly where the noise was coming from, but I about shit myself when that thing lit off!
